I like what Neil did with the DPC Zenfolio Users Group and thought it would be good to have a starting point for people use Aperture.

I was doing my RAW processing and editing of session photos with Capture One, but have recently moved back to Aperture. I've learned some interesting things along the way, like that it is possible to have both managed and referenced photos in the same library, and thought it would be good to have a common place to ask questions and share ideas.

I'm an Aperture user and welcome this forum.

I've just started doing most of my edits in Aperture. I still do some things in Lightroom, however as I sort out how things work in Aperture I am liking it more and more.

I've always been a lame PS person, but have Aperture and never used as I really am clueless. This would be wonderful!

While I'm finding that I can get a lot farther with Aperture than I ever would have thought possible, I do still use PS in a number of situations. The two tools really can work quite well together

I use both Aperture and PS regularly.

Same here, I use Aperture for RAW edits and PS for photo edits, I don't think you should treat them as mutually exclusive, they work very well together.

Great! I stuck at PS currently and am totally clueless on Aperture, lol! The only way to go is up! :P

I'm an Aperture user and with all of the Nik plugins, seldom need to roundtrip to Photoshop.

I am an Aperture user. Also have all the Nik plugins. No need for PS. Although, I do use PS Elements for resizing and USM filter passes. It's a good idea for Aperture users to share ideas and tips.

I do my final sharpening and resizing in Preview.

Here is a link to an interesting blog post from Chase Jarvis about Photoshop vs Aperture for B&W. I am not anti-photoshop in anyway, but I do like to see how much can be done with Aperture.

Oh great idea. Aperture user here also, although only recently been using it as my main tool. Still using PS CS5 for many things.

Well, I have a troublesome problem to toss out here in case anyone has seen (and fixed) this:

About a month ago, all my Nik plugins asked for activation when I tried to use them. A friend across the country had this happen on the same day. He uninstalled and reinstalled them, and solved his problem. I simply downloaded and reinstalled them directly from the Nik site. Worked great.

So yesterday, I had an entirely new problem: Silver Efex Pro 2 suddenly "Could Not Open Image File" It could open image files that it had previously opened on Saturday. And it could open image files that were original masters in Aperture--that is, they had not been opened by any other Nik plugin. If I used my normal flow of Dfine and RAW Presharpener, then SEP2 will not open them. If I used Viveza 2 or Color EFX on the file, SEP2 will not open them. It will readily and easily open any imported file that has not been opened by a Nik Plug in.

So, I reinstalled SEP2 fresh from the Nik site again, no joy. So I reinstalled all my Nik plugins again with fresh copies from the Nik site. No joy. So, I uninstalled and installed SEP2 --no joy.

To make matters worse, with the uninstall, reinstall, I lost several personally created custom presets in SEP2. So if anyone can track down where their custom created presets are stored in the Mac OS (not the presets imported from the nik site, but where the ones you create yourself are stored) I'd like to go hunting in my Time Machine backups and restore them.

This is a colossal pain, as Nik SEFP2 will now not fit into a normal workflow. I did put in a ticket with NIK, so maybe they can help. I'd really like to recover those personal presets. And I'd really like SEP2 to stop rejecting files that its siblings have touched.

Can't help (especially with the presets) but I also have the same problem that you have reported. It seems Paul has the same thing going on too. My work around was to duplicate the version, then everything was fine (I hasten to add I have not had the problem with the activation, but that has been widely reported in the Nik Flickr group). But duplicating the version is not really the answer. I haven't reported this to Nik but perhaps I should. If enough of us do, then maybe they will fix it!

Thanks! I will try that. the ODD thing is that Saturday I did not have to do this, and mid-way thru editing on Sunday, I suddenly had this problem. No software upgrades in the middle of the editing session, that's for sure :-)

I guess I will create a custom preset in SEP2, then try to search out where it lands in my mac, then try to recover the lost ones from a time machine backup.

I posted the could not open image file on the nik users group on Flickr. The Nik support guy on there suggested a ticket, so perhaps I'll also do a ticket! As there are at least 3 of us with the same problem, then it's obviously something Nik need to look into.

Aperture's workflow is different from PS. We are not creating multiple stacked layers, per se. We start with a version from the master file. First step is to apply adjustments in the main Aperture program. Then, we can apply adjustments through any of the plug-in filters... but one at a time. But, I think it works best to apply a filter adjustment to a duplicate version, so you can go back and do it differently or better later. What I do is apply a plug-in filter adjustment. Make a duplicate version (so I can return to this point if I need to). Apply a different plug-in filter adjustment. Make a duplicate version. etc., etc.

I've found there is a practical limit to this. Frankly, after "too many" filter adjustments, the image starts to look overprocessed and "soft". I think that makes sense. The images with the most clarity will have gone through the minimal number of filter adjustments to achieve the desired end result. For example, if you use Viveza2 and Color Efex 3 and SEP2 and Dfine, it's best to use them only once each and it does seem to matter which order. But, it's always possible to go back to one of the earlier versions and try a different pathway.

I don't pretend to have the answers here, but the more I "trial and error" Aperture with NikSoftware plug-ins, the more efficient it becomes.

Let's make sure we're on the same page, with regards to most recent version of Aperture.

Version 3.1.2
04/26/2011 12:16:19 PM · #22
The fundamental issue is that, while every other Nik Plugin will open the images in question, SEP2 will not. SEP2 seems to suddenly Require a duplicate image in order to open the images. And this is new behavior. Yes, creating a duplicate works, and yes, creating duplicates at certain stages of workflow does make sense.

I shouldn't NEED to create a duplicate of an image that has only had Dfine noise reduction in order to open SEP2.

But when every other Nik Plugin can open the image, a failure of SEP2 to do so is a bug, not a workflow issue.

But the creation of a duplicate as a workaround for the bug did work! Thanks salmiakki !

Now, if I can just find the location of the custom presets I made in the Time Machine backups, I'll be too legit to quit :-)

I am at least using all the current versions of the software.

The Custom presets should be as follows: go to Home folder, Library, Preferences, Nik Software, SEP2, User Presets

Hopefully that will help you find them on your Time Machine.

Actually, I want to be able to return to a version reflecting changes made by a specific plug-in before I attempted additional changes with a different plugin. This seems like good workflow to me, rather than a "bug". After the fact, a different pathway may make more sense and produce a better result. Absent the duplicate version requirement, you'd have to create a new version from the master file.
