Took these a few minutes ago in the flower bed...the sun is setting and I had never tried low-light, sunset, flower photography (is there really such a thing?) and thought I'd post them so you could pick them apart. Thanks in advance for any comments/critiques!

I don't really like the color yellow, but those are nice shots. I think the second one looks really nice. Just need a different color flower. :)

Perhaps...but this is Texas, and yellow is pretty appropriate for us! LOL

edit: The Yellow Rose of Texas is what I'm referencing...just in case non-Texans didn't know...

ROFL!

Anyway...to bring this back around to the subject at hand...any critiques or comments about my rather dark flower photos? LOL

Unlike some around here, I really like flower pictures!

I love the picture of the single rose. The color and lighting on it are superb.

The second picture is nice. But I find that the brighter (albeit blurred) rose in the background keeps drawing me away from the rose in the foreground. I think if the foreground rose had been bathed in sunset light and the rose in the background had had a little less light on it, it would have worked out much better.

Just my opinion ... hope it helps.

I too have nothing about flowerphotos, but I think your goal was wrong. You didn't want to take photo's of the rose, but you just took these photos because it was a low light situation. You may not like my opinion, but I'm honest and I think these are just average photos of a rose that could have been taken by anyone around with a camera.

I appreciate your directness...and I did want to take the photos of the roses because of the low light situation, that's true...but I also thought the roses were pretty in the kind of light that was available. How else am I supposed to learn if I don't try something new every once in a while?

I actually love them. I am one of these people who never get sick of looking at flowers. Well done. Check out my website and tell me what you think of my flowers too, if you want. www.robertlent.com/photography

For a guy, I absolutely love floral pics. I think these are pretty good. I like them very much so.

Sorry if I sounded too harsh, Ofcourse the best way to learn is by taking a lot of pictures in all kind of situations. Just don't expect that all pictures you take during the learningproces are great.
I don't think they are bad photo's, I just think they are photo's that could have been taken by anyone with any camara around in that situation. I also think that you are talented and should try to make more then average photos in any situation.

Hey I would do something like this with your single rose...
I think that would be beautiful with the 2 different tones (yellow and white). Just my opinion

Here is my 10 minute stab at it..I changed the color on it. I didn't know how else to show you it..and I will take it off my portfolio after you look at it.

That's nice, Crystal. Are you using Photoshop Elements?
07/12/2004 11:10:26 PM · #20
I have a really old version of Photoshop elements. I also have Photoshop CS. But have no clue how to really use it. I like the older one better. Anyway..let me know when you see the picture of yours that I edited and tell me what you think.

I adore yellow flowers to begin with, and the first one is is very lush and beautiful. The second one - I agree with what was said about the lighting. I do think it is hard to take a bad flower picture if the basic focus, etc., is there. The petals look a little thick or maybe NeatImaged? But that could be the flower or the effect you desired for it. Maybe I should move to Texas if you have a lot of yellow flowers!

Crystal...I like the colors you chose to use...very painterly.
07/12/2004 11:13:23 PM · #23
I really like flowers that have a "painted" look to them. Makes them look more "classic".

I have five yellow rose bushes in my flower bed...they're my favorite!! I think all the other flowers we have growing are a bit jealous...LOL

I should have gotten the shot with the two flowers from the other side...but our neighbor's driveway and car were in view, so I went with the other direction. Anyway, it gave me something to work with tonight! :o)
