I didn't see this mentioned in the rules, but what about black and white photography? Are we are not allowed to convert photographs to black and white? Or what if the camera was set on black and white? Or does it matter?

Just wanted to make sure...

I posted this, too, but probably in the wrong section. For those of us whose cameras don't have a B&W mode, is converting in software okay? Duotoning? I've also read conflicting things about cropping. The rules say crop's okay, but I read somewhere else that you couldn't crop to remove unwanted elements. What's the story? Thanks.

I would think they mean do not crop anything out of the middle of the picture. My software allows for this and it is great for getting rid of things that I don't want in the background.

Just wanted to find out what software you are using? So far I have only the software that came with my camera and it doesn't do much
Thanks

I use Irfan View for browsing and, occasionally, for downsizing. I use Photoshop 5.5 for editing. Does anyone have an answer to the original question? Deadline's coming up for this challenge, and I'd love to know if converting to B&W in software is acceptable.

I may not have been clear, Shortred. "crop" is listed in the rules as an acceptable image modification, but I read a response somewhere in the forums that seemed to say you couldn't crop to exclude elements (ie. chopping off the right side of a picture to lose Uncle Mike or something). It's not possible to crop out an area inside an image. That's done by cloning, painting, or via a selection.

irae-

There's usually a committee to handle such questions. I'm going it alone this week as the rest of the committee is on vacation (it's okay, they'll be without me next week). For now I'm going to have to say no you cannot convert the image to black and white only because the rules state so.

Realizing not all cameras have B&W/Sepia/Etc mode, we will look into allowing this in the future.

Thanks for being honest,
Langdon

I'd like to vote *for* cropping away parts of a picture you don't want, since the 3:2 guys have to crop anyway. Cropping is numbingly low tech, and with cameras that have poor macro capabilities it enables you to capture a whole range of shots that you'd never be able to create without slicing off a good percentage of the image.

Go cropping!

Why is it you've got to vacation alone? ;-) Hope you have a great time, and thanks for the answer. I'll keep my fingers crossed that, when the Loyal Order of Water Buffalo reconvenes, B&W conversion and a new size standard of 640 pixels on the long dimension get the thumbs up. I've been to a photo site or two, and, aside from those two little things, you've got a very good one going here. The challenge concept is great, and I really like the way you set up votes / comments. Keep up the good work!

Yeah, you are right. I can understand why there is so much confusion over the issue.
