Sure I'll start off and jinx myself. I do love the early voters.

whoa!! Nice!

edited to add: send some of those voters over to the weston challenge -- scores seem a little flatter over there. :)

Gone through half the challenge entries tonight. Going slow and commenting on all of them. I'll get to the rest of you in the next couple days. As for my own entry, I'm doing better than I thought. At a 5.3 so far. If I creep a little in either direction I'll still be satisfied.

Thanks for your comment and even more for the effort you're going to make!

I too got your comment, which was a very nice way to start the day! I'll try to comment on all as well :)

As for my score, I'd like to stay not too far from my average (5.2074), which is actually what is going on:

Can we remove an Image from a challenge without a penalty?
03/30/2011 09:51:24 AM · #11
So, my first attempt at a challenge. I have been so busy, but found time to snap a shot off for this challenge. From what I have read, this is not a bad beginning:

Well, I hope to learn and improve in the next one. :))

Don't think so, it counts as a DQ -- but I don't think the first DQ in a certain period of time carries a penalty from entering.

But why would you?

Cumulative scores mean nothing here. So you have a bad entry, just let it ride and learn from it.

Not expecting much out of mine but I just wish the trolls would have the cajones to leave a comment!

I realise everyone is entitled to their own opinion but a string of moderately high scores (between 5-8) followed by a 2 makes you wonder!

Ah the joys of DPC - I have missed it!

Oh yes, and how about the endless discussions about not marking under 5? I personally am not surprised, saddened or angered by low votes. Seriously, how much would have I scored myself?

Is it me, but it seems that saving an image for the web really softens the image. My photo is sharp, but when I saved it ... now it is softer looking. UGH!

My problem is when I size it to 800 pixels wide and go to upload it says the file is too big...I need resolution!

Do you sharpen after you resize? I think most people use unsharp mask in photoshop.

I will find the tutorial on saving for web, this but it is key. Once you lower the image to 800 pixels (or the nearest large natural percentage i.e. 764 pixels at a 25% reduction is sharper than 800 pixels at a 26.8097%). Then run it through a noise filter and hit it with USM again at 80/.5/0.

The conversion down from a large 3200 pixel image to a 800 pixel image requires the computer to mash 3 pixels into 1, so its going to make it mushy blurry noisy, clean it up and then save it at whatever quality you need to to get under the file size limit. My entry in the challenge was saved a level 6 quality and while the tones suffer the edges are crisp.

Edit to addTutorial is fairly old but it works well, just don't submit at 640 pi, we now have the luxury of the huge 800 pi

Hmmm, so far you win the brown John. But I am still aiming at my personal worst.
I am amazed at how people can vote so fast. I barely looked once and will take more time to vote.
Just glanced at Weston's look alike shots.
