Don't know if this has been suggested before but how about a challenge to test people's interpretation and editting skills by providing a standard photo and asking people to edit it as they feel fit?

Advanced editting would probably be sufficient to give enough scope for a wide range of outcomes.

I suspect 100 entries of the exact same image tweaked in a handful of different ways would turn into a snooze fest for the voters very, very quickly.

It (or something very similar) has been run as a side challenge in the past -- I suggest a search for threads on "post-processing" or some variation ...

There is that risk but then you often get good share of relatively dull shots in many challenges (see my portfolio!).

The emphasis would be to make the photo stand out using your editting skills and it could be a good way to share techniques and illustrate what is possible...

As I'm getting more into editting, I could do with knowing whether it is my skill as a photographer or as a post-processor where I need to concentrate my efforts (the answer is both, by the way!).

Ah but then this would go more along the lines of digital art and away from photography. You could always start up a side challenge. Even set it up with a virtual ribbon of which will get voted on.

I think it would illustrate clearly where the line is between digital art and photography. Given all the tools and filters we have at our disposal, wringing the maximum change out of an image while preserving it's documentary value would be the greatest part of the challenge.
