Hi all,

I am wondering if you can help me. I have just upgraded from a Canon 400D to a 5D today and have got myself a Tamron 17-50mm lens to go on it. It is my first full frame DSLR and I am a bit lost and slowly working my way through the instruction book that came with it as it is a lot more complicated than I thought, especially to such an amateur as myself. The main problem I am having at the moment is that all my photos are framed by a big black ring, obviously the barrel of the lens but I can't get rid of it. I know it is probably something stupid that I am missing but I don't know how to solve it. I feel a bit of an idiot really and a bit out of my depth. What I am doing wrong??

Hope someone can help.

Cheers.

The Tamron lens is basically an EFS lens. Meaning it's image circle is designed to use with Crop cameras not full frame cameras. That lens would work nicely with no black area on your 40D but not the full frame of the 5D.

Edit to add this link notice the warning that says "Not compatible with 35mm or digital cameras with image sensor larger than APS-C size"

Thankyou so much. I can't believe it, the guy at the shop sold it to me with the 5D today and told me I had made a good choice to start off with as I couldn't afford the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens. I am gutted, he seemed to know what he was talking about!!

Oh well, back there tomorrow then.

Thankyou.

You are welcome. BTW congrats on the purchase of your 5D, it is a great camera choice.

I managed to get a really good deal on it as it is second hand and got PX on my 400D. I didn't think I would be able to afford such a great camera so soon so I am delighted. Just wish I had a lens so i could go out and use it. I think I will go and get the Canon EF 17-40mm F/4L USM instead tomoorw. Not as quick as a F/2.8 but affordable and compatable with myn camera!! I hope!!
Thanks again.

Yeah, the 17-40 f/4L USM will definitely work on the 5D. All L lenses are Full-frame. It's a great lens and f/4 is only one stop slower than f/2.8. It's definitely a much higher quality lens than the Tamron.

I was going to buy the Canon 17-40mm today but the lure of the f/2.8 became irresistable and I have ended up with a useless (for this camera) lens. I wish I had listened to my instincts rather than the bloke in the shop. My confidence has been slightly boosted, thankyou x

If you still have the lens...your EF 75-300mm lens will fit the Canon 5D as will all Canon EF lenses. Not the highest quality lens in the world to match up with the 5D, but it will work as designed until you get the better glass you want.

Just remember... All EF-S and EF lenses will work on a crop body such as the Canon XT, XSi, T1i, T2i, 40D, 50D, 7D and more. On the Canon full frame cameras such as the 1D series and the 5D series you can ONLY use the EF lenses.

Thanks Dave,

They offered me part ex on the 75-300mm lens but I have kept it as I think it will be worth more to me than to them in the long run. I just want a really good lens to go with my smashing 5D camera especially since i am going to America in September, for the first time, and want some gorgeous landscapes to remember such a special trip. This is the reason for the premature 5D buy, but I wanted a fab camera to capture the Olympic National Park, the west coast of Oregon, the Cascade Mountains and Seattle. I am so excited about this holiday (which is a treat for my 40th birthday from my fella!!). I am hoping that the combination of the 75-300mm Canon lens and the 17-40mm Canon lens will do the scenery justice.

Cheers,

Jane

Awesome. I am severely envious. Make sure you load up on memory cards. The scenery there is spectacular.

The 17-40mm f/4L will do you just fine. These will whet your appetite :-)

I am definately going to get a lot of memory cards for this trip thanks Bohemka and have even bought a little netbook with 250gb of memory to take with me so I don't miss out on anything, this is a holiday of a lifetime for me and 'I don't want to miss a thing' (to quote a well known aerosmith song!!).

Those pictures are amazing Bear Music, and am thinking that the 17-40mm is a really good choice!! I am sorry to be so over-enthusiastic but I am really looking forward to September!!

Can I also say (without being too cheesy I hope) that I want to thank everyone who has responded. I haven't been on the site much over the last 18 months due to personal reasons, but you were the first people I thought of to help me with my problem and you didn't let me down. And even though my problem was a silly one, due to inexperience, your responses were thoughtful, helpful, supportive and virtually instant. Thankyou, I really appreciate it.

You could go the Tamron 28-75 f2.8.
It would be the perfect lens for your 5d.
Much cheaper than the canon version but not quite as wide.
Maybe have a look at that.

28-75mm Tamron is very decent glass, especially for the price, but where it really shines is on the crop-sensor cameras; you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between that and the (much more expensive) 24-70mm f/2.8L on the cropped Canons. However, on the full frame bodies it's not quite so stellar a performer, losing quite a bit in the corners. I've got one, that I started with on the 20D and now use (occasionally) on the 5D — and it's an OK lens for FF but nothing to shout from the rooftops I don't think.

That's my feeling, anyway. If you can get a decently-riced, used 28-75mm Tamron in addition to the 17-40mm f/4L, by all means do; it will fill the gap nicely, and be good to have. But don't even THINK about choosing it over the 17-40mm...

Good call Bear. Didn't realise it's performance on FF was that bad.

Hope you enjoy your holiday and your new Canon 5D. Get that lens sorted and you will be quite happy with your kit. I too use a netbook for holidays as I can check mail and store shots each day. I like your enthusiasm and genuine excitement with new purchase, after a while, getting new gear can lose its bite and become just another upgrade.

Your post made me check my own gear as just recently I had thought of changing back to Canon. I was shocked to learn that those black bits of electronics that make pictures are priced at almost £7k. Perhaps I need to cut it down a bit??

Enjoy your camera and your holiday, post loads of photos for us:))

I have to admit I was looking at the 28-75 Tamron when I realised that I had bought the wrong lens as it is a really good price. I am thinking that I will go with the 17-40mm canon and hope that I can get the Tamron at a decent price to cover the gap. I didn't think buying a lens would be so difficult!!

It's not THAT bad, it's just that the lens has a stellar rep on cropped sensor cameras (deservedly) and it can't live up to that standard on the FF camera. It's still a decent piece of kit. I haven't gotten rid of mine :-)

Glass obsession is worse than camera fixation. Prime or zoom? Is the 1.4 worth 4 times the price of the 1.8? Do you really need the image stabilization on 2.8 glass? There is no end to the questions or one right answer.

Why not but a humble 50mm 1.8? Its a great deal, its pretty fast and its good corner to corner.A prime for a sawbuck? How can you miss?
The Tamron 28-75 xr/di is pretty weak at the edges full frame, but I've heard proponents of the 16-35 talk about how soft the 17-40 is at the corners, so the joy of decent glass is hearing someone with a fatter wallet tell you how inferior what you can afford is to what they can afford.

I saw a show of the f64 at the Oakland museum this week end and they did pretty good work considering the stuff they had to shoot with. Spend what you can and shoot.
