How about a once a month (or however often) sponsored challenge.

Once a month a sponsor puts forward a challenge with a theme of their choice and offers a prize. The winner gets the prize and the sponsor gets to use the winning photo (rights of the photo obviously up for discussion).

Such an example could be Lowepro (or a Lowepro retailer) offering a camera bag to the winner of a "Wilderness" photo. I'm sure there's enough quality here and combined with the exposure they would get, it would be worth their while, and someone gets a free piece of kit out of it.

Obviously there will be those that say that the sponsor gets quality photos for far less than they should actually be paying, and if you feel that about your photos, then no need to enter, but it just strikes me that there are people going to great lengths to get great shots just for DPC, and it would be kinda cool if you could win something out of it!

Thoughts?

Ohhhhhh. I like this idea.
Problem would be getting sponsorship. Great idea though.

I don't think there would be a problem with getting sponsors at all. I think many would jump at the chance. I think getting site approval would be the hard part.

I haven't thought this over at all, but my first impulse thought is: "Brilliant idea!!!"
Like you said, if people are against the idea for whatever reason, they don't have to enter.

I'm not sure a "sponsor" would be interested in limiting their rights to the image chosen by the voters, though. Certainly, if *I* were sponsoring and was looking for images for my promotional usage, I'd want some input into the judging.

Honestly, though, I'm not sure that it's even necessary to give images away in order to attract sponsors; the goodwill alone might be sufficient, surely? I donno...

Of course, some would say DPCers already take these challenges way too seriously: how much will that mindset escalate if there are actual, valuable prizes to be won? The mind boggles at the thought...

This is true, perhaps the sponsor could choose THEIR winning photo outside of the DPC vote, that way they get to take their pick and the voters still get to have their say.

You could be right about the super seriousness, imagine there was a DQ!

Shilling at DPC via challenges... I don't like it. That's a road I'd hate to see this site go down.

FWIW the idea has been rejected the previous time(s) it has come up, for multiple reasons.

Of course, I'd be OK with a form of "sponsorship" where SC members get rewarded with camera gear for having to screen all those photos and take all that flak ... ;-)

I must admit, same. I think this one challenge would take away the fun from the regular challenges, and a ribbon wouldn't be as valued. Just IMO.

would completely transform the nature of this site, and I don't think for the better.

Probably right. Perhaps an idea for a new site then :)

I love this idea!

I think to satisfy all, it should be an 'extra' challenge... like the Thursday challenge this week.

That way, the folks who don't want to give up rights to their photo will still have the same number of challenges to enter.

why not just have a sponser give away a prize and in return they get free advertisement during the challenge. no one gives up any rights, and maybe more people get drawn to the site.

Just to throw a curve ball in the discussion... what about all of the entrants that dont live in USA?
If the sponsor is in the USA and has to ship the package to the most remote tiny village in the middle of (enter your idiea of a desolate foreign country here).

Given no one can seem to get Langdon to sign off on DPC gear that he could make some money on, I see this happening about the same time that monkeys fly out of our collective butts.

but if the winner of the challenge is an awesome photographer and kept on winning? dont you think that would get irritating to the rest of us? and i also agree with the thought that if it were to happen, the idea of winning a 'ribbon' wouldnt be as fun or enjoyable if once a month there was a prize. it would make the other challenges not as fun and less motivation would be there since there is a 'better challenge' available.

just imo

why not have DpChallenge sponser the Free Study each month?... for first place, blue ribbon only, the winner receives a free year membership.. if you win two blues in a year, you only win one free year and the second time you win the prize moves to second place... That's only 12 memberships per year, why not in an effort to get participation up?
