My 21 year old, soon to graduate from college, daughter has a third interview with Target corporate in Minneapolis in a few weeks. Seeing as it's a third interview and they are paying to fly her out there, things look pretty promising for her. (I have mixed feelings. Yay, she's getting a job. Boo, she'd move 1125 miles away.)

Anyway, what I'm looking for is people who may be familiar with Minneapolis to give me an idea of where might be a good place for her and her boyfriend to find a reasonably priced, safe apartment. They are both graduating in May, so they would be setting out on their first foray into adulthood . In Minneapolis itself would probably be best for them starting out, I suppose. Are there good neighborhoods that are easily affordable for them (with the necessities nearby...public transportation, food, etc.) and are there neighborhoods that they should absolutely avoid? (My guess is that the worst neighborhood in Minneapolis is probably better than the best neighborhood in Baltimore).

(I'm not looking for help in finding them an apartment...unless you have one to rent cheap...more just neighborhood guidance)

Forbes magazine lists Minneapolis/St. Paul as the 3rd best city in America for young professionals to live in. They shouldn't have any problems. Lotta smart, young college graduates there. It's been a long time since I've been there, but I liked the Twin Cities. From what I see online, Upland, near the lake, is the place to be. Everyone says NOT to go to the suburbs, that the city itself has great vibe and the burbs are deathly boring.

I am from Minneapolis. If your daughter is going to be working in downtown Minneapolis, just avoid the Powderhorn area or the North side. There are plenty of apartments within the downtown area however, they can be pretty expensive. The apartments around the lakes (like Calhoun, Harriet, Lake of the Isles, Nokomis) are great neighborhood but there's a caveat. The first three lakes I mentioned are in the Uptown area. There are buses to take her to work but if she chooses to own a car, parking can be hard in that area... Also, there's the Light Rail Transit that can take her to downtown. She should research the areas that are in the LRT line... If you have more questions, let me know. :)

But if she's with target corporate, I thought their headquarters were out on 494 in Bloomington. If that's the case, they might want to be in the burbs instead of downtown. Probably cheaper and not as much of a hassle transportation-wise.

Target Corporate HQ is downtown on Nicollet. You might be thinking of Best Buy, which relocated all of their corporate operations to 494 and Penn Ave (in Richfield, a few miles west of Bloomington) a few years back.

I work in Minnetonka, but I commute from about 30 miles west of the cities. I don't know much about Minneapolis proper. Its not very exciting, but I get to drive through cornfields on the way home :)

If I were to work downtown, I'd look really hard at living right downtown as well, if the price is manageable.

My kid IS moving to Minneapolis. She had the interview today and they called and offered her the job before she even got on a plane to come home. I'm happy for her, but still sad that she's moving away. But I guess we all have to start our adult lives sometime and somewhere.
