Later this summer I'm going to a 3 day concert. I went last year and wished I had brought a camera. I emailed the promoters and I can't bring my Nikon in unless I have a photo/press pass. Well since I doubt anyone will just give me one, I'm looking for suggestions for a good point and shoot. Something with a damn good zoom and can reasonably handle night shots. So please throw me some suggestions.

AFAIK all of the compact/long-zoom cameras (like mine) suffer from poor low-light performance ... :-(

Agree with the general. You may or may not be able to get something decent. Depends on conditions. If you want to borrow one, I have a Powershot S5 that you can borrow for a while, or I'd sell it if you were interested in having it for keeps.

If you can get what you need without the long zoom, there's a Powershot G9 for sale in this thread for $200.

I like the looks of this camera. I'll have to see if I can find one in town to play with. Thanks

Or you could do a sony nex camera with an adapter and an old, but great canon fd lens.. like this:
//cgi.ebay.com/Canon-300mm-f4-FD-lens-f-4-0-prime-telephoto-/170340061668?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item27a90f11e4

which will, if i'm correct, be a 600mm f4 on a sony nex.....

I can't get away with a lens like that. They wont allow interchangeable lenses without press pass. But I have been looking at the nex cameras

You can't really get a P&S camera that handles low light AND has a good zoom (at least not one that would be any less intimidating to security than your Nikon). A fast, long lens for a sensor large enough to deliver low noise will be just as big as an entry level DSLR or the newer EVF cameras from Sony. The Camera S95 and Panasonic Lumix LX5 will give you great low light performance, but only zoom to a little over 100mm. An SX30 or Lumix ZS series will give you long zoom reach, but at the expense of noise at anything over ISO 200 or 400. Pick your poison.

Pure Blasphemy! If you sell it the devil will surely make you pay! :P

Alternatively... Have you tried to get a Press Pass???

I know mostly nothing about it, but it sounds like it may be a viable option.

Don't know. you might have to submit all of your images to someone for the privilege. But you will get to use your good gear..

No I wouldn't begin to know where to start with that. And I doubt anyone would give me one after seeing my pictures

You're forgiven. Just slip a 50 under my door on the way out and we'll pretend it never happened. LOL.

Try to find a way to connect with some of the people from the radio station or stations. Remote broadcast locations are a good place to meet the radio personalities. If you get around to showing them pix that you have shot of similar events, you may be able to get in as a personal or station's photographer with a pass from them. They have a few comp passes and may be willing to trade one for the chance to get a good photo op with the performers. I don't know if that will still work, with everyone having good digital cams now, but it got me back stage several times in the 70s and early 80s.

I know a guy who prints out fake press passes for himself. Maybe that's an idea :D

I just read a pre-release review of the Nikon P500, which sounds like just what you want: f1.8 lens, 36x (22-810mm 35mm EQ) zoom, about $400 ... it is due out in March, so there should be a chance for it to get evaluated at DPreview.com before you need to get it -- here is the preview there.

ETA: Supposedly will also have built-in HDR, image-stacking, and zoom-during-video (1080p) ...
