I can't photograph anymore. I don't see the beauty or forms around me. I just "am". And thinking about that, makes me feel even more down. What can I do to break out of this cycle?
I am terrible shy and xenophobic guy (hate it) and I am actually afraid of asking one of my very dear friend to come out with me and photograph... what can I do?
Help me...

You poor Dear... There is nothing more sad than a photographer who doesn't photograph. Sounds to me like you only have one option to break out of your fugue and that's to 'cowboy up'. You're gonna have to dig deep and get out there with your finger on that shutter!

Jón - i think most of us go through this stage and it usually happens when 'something' is going on in our lives. I have been through this recently and its hard but am now back on track and enjoying myself again. I hope things improve for you.

best of luck
Mike

I don't have any awesome words of wisdom except to let you know I have been there, too, and think it seems to pop up here fairly often. Maybe it is something about people who choose and love photography? Anyway, I will keep you in my heart and try to send some "good energy" your way. We can all use it and I am glad to see the helpful spirit people join into here. Good luck and my sincere best wishes for you.

EDIT: You have way too much talent to waste, also!!

Hello? You live in Iceland- a scenic country with perhaps the deepest DPC talent pool on the planet. Just post a thread to see if other members would like to get together for a photo trip. You might absorb some enthusiasm and tips from familiar DPC members in your area. The fact that they're part of the DPC family and share your interest ought to help with the shyness. Good luck.

Hello, Jon. Don't get discouraged. It'll come back to you, just give it time and stop trying so hard.

I'm not a photographer but I do dabble with writing. In our (the writer's) case, what you're suffering would be referred to as "writer's block" and it's common and as accepted as a baseball player's (or in the Chicago Cubs' case, the whole team's) batting slump. It bums you out, but it rarely lasts forever.

With writing, I find I have two clear choices. Either I write something even if it's bad, so long as I'm writing, and worry about cleaning it up later when I get out of my slump, OR I walk away from the project completely and wait for the block to pass. I had a story once that I started but couldn't find a way to finish for over a year. Then one day, it just popped into my head and I finished the story in a matter of hours. Turned out to be a work of which I am still quite proud.

Perhaps just stop trying so hard to find the "beauty and forms" that seem so elusive to you right now. Instead, just go out and shoot whatever you see, however you see it, and make it just for fun again (even if it means sitting out a few challenges). After all, it's digital, i.e. easily deleted if you don't like the results, right? And who knows, maybe through the course of making it fun again, you'll find what you're missing along the way.

Good luck.
