Recently, for my birthday celebration, my good friends from Denver had a cake decoration made from one of my bobcat photos. I thought this turned out really great and wanted to share the creative idea.

I really liked this. It was very special to me. On the side of the cake, (w/o my reading glasses), I first read the words as "Mature" Photographer. I thought.... gee, my aging is accelerating. I was relieved, on a more careful reading, to see it said "Nature" Photographer. LOL!!!

Oh, that's cool! I can only give it a 4 because of ISO noise, however. If you'd send me a piece I might bump that up to a 6.

Oh, and happy birthday!

Happy Birthday Richard! Was the decoration made of icing?

Your good friends from Denver had the right idea, and excellent execution.

Congratulations on your 59th birthday, and also, I note,
your induction into the rarefied 400 Challenges club.

Yes, edible icing. Not sure how it was done, but I really like it.

Wow! I hadn't noticed. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes, edible icing. Not sure how it was done, but I really like it.

It's done with a modified ink-jet process, which sprays vegetable-based colors onto a thin white matrix of some kind of frosting, which in turn is on a "carrier sheet" of something similar to waxed paper. It's actually printed in reverse, and you lay it down on top of the cake (I think with some frosting already on it) and peel off the carrier to yield a right-reading image.

The process has actually been around for quite a while, and is pretty widely available (e.g. the bakery in the local Safeway supermarket offers it) -- I made this collage to decorate Isaac's birthday cake almost eleven years ago.

BTW: The main part of this image (the dinosaur and stonework and "tree trunks") were essentially a sculpture assembled on the glass of a flatbed scanner, not shot with a camera at all.
