This thing scared the shit out of me! I was getting chairs for my new apartment that have been sitting outside for years. My mom told me I just needed to dust them, so that's what I was about to do when I see this f*cker sitting there. I backed off so quickly and told me sister to run and get my camera. Then I ran and got my tripod and zoom lense.

Once I was done, I got my raid.

I know I was writing about hating pet stores and zoos and what not, and I guess it could be argued that I'm a hypocite because I killed this spider, but anyway. I hate spiders.

Great shot. I treat many patients every year who get bitten from blackwidow spiders. Glad you were not one of them.

Since we're talking about spiders, shot this in China...anybody know what it is...other than scary looking.

Great shot todd. I cant say that I am an expert on the arachnids in China but it closely resembels the common garden spider in the us. If bitten it may cause a nastay "necrotic bite". Regardless it is a beautiful picture.

By the way, Black Widows are immune to most poisons. Did you actually see it die? I have one outside my house that I leave there for the fun of it.

Most of the thumbnails you see are internal site links to images in a member's portfolio.

briphoto- kill it now before you regret it. Not worth the risk.

It started running in circles, and shriveled up a little bit, but then I couldn't find it. And I wasn't going to stick my head down there, so maybe it ran off.

I'd just like to think I killed it anyway.

Don't be too sure.

Black Widows are cool... They are only aggressive if you startle them or provoke them. All of these animals for the most will not bite you unless it's a "last resort" situation. They don't want to waste venom on things that are not prey.

However with Widows you really don't want them around on your patio furniture, etc., because there's a chance someone will grab right where they are and possibly get bitten. I've come close lots of times. They will not actively attack you (ie. chase you, or come out and bite for no reason).

Here's a shot of one under my dog house. I was able to get within 5 inches of him with no problems. After, I left him alone and put the dog house back down:

This guy was almost 2 inches across with a marble sized body.

Yeah?

I think they're pretty common here in the US too, and they're definitely one of the most feared spiders as well. They're just so big and black, and have that red hourglass figure on them, that's insanely creepy.

I also found out it'd dead. I saw it with my own eyes, and, just to be sure, I got my mom (since I'm a wimp) to step on it. :)

Edited for a typo.

one reason i would consider it prudent to kill the black widows living around the perimeter of your house - would be to consider the fact they are living where they are in order to reproduce.

i wouldn't want an infestation in my garage....

I am telling ya that ALL Black Widows orignate from the house me and my husband used to live in, in a very very small town (pop. 152)..Damar, Kansas. We went to the basement one day to unlock the cellar door from inside and there was this MASSIVE web...really thick blocking the whole doorway. We got out the flashlight and saw probably close to 100 or more Black Widows all in the corners...As you can imagine..we were 2 steps (exageration on the 2 steps..) upstairs and moved out. That was scary. I didn't have a camera then as that was over a year ago..but it is a very scary house.
(true story..somewhat scary..somewhat funny...Weird though)

A guy just burned down his house around here doing that exact stunt! Seems a little extreme (but a little funny, too). I have crushed a few of their white egg sacs myself already.
