The challenge: Capture a color portrait of a PERSON in a studio-like environment. I'm a little disappointed that pictures of pets finished ahead of mine...at least I can follow directions even though I have much to learn about soft focus.

I automaticaly gave anything other than a person a 1 or a 2. They should not have finished above yours.

How did you try to achieve your soft focus? What were your steps? Was it in post or did you try to use a filter, gel, etc. during the capture?

I softened it too much in post...I never know when to just stop adjusting my photos :o) I get a little carried away.

How do you soften? I use Gaussian Blur at 4 or 5 (yes that high), then reduce the effect to about 20-25%. Depending on thge challenge, I will either do it using a blended layer (memeber challenge) or just an effect on the base image (regular challenge).

Check out my entry in colour portraits. I used this softening technique on my entry.

Give it a try, and show us the results on the original photo.

How do you reduce the effect after you apply the Gaussian Blur? I'm trying it now and I can't figure it out. I'm using Photoshop CS.

Thanks!

I think I answered my own question, but let me run it by you anyway...

Do you create a duplicate layer of the portrait, apply the blur and then reduce the opacity of the entire layer? Then flatten? That's what I did and it seems to have the affect you're talking about.

That will work for the members challenges. You can also use different blending modes for varying effects.

For the open challenges, you have to do it all one the same layer. Here's how I do it (in PS7):
Apply Gaussian Blur to image (around 4-5)
Under "edit" tab, select "Fade Gaussian Blur" and reduce the opacity to the desired effect (I tend to use 20-25%). But remember, you cannot change the Blending mode if it's for an open challenge.

That's it. I tend to use it quite often as I like the feel of a softened image.

mariomel thank you for the tip on blending, I tried it, and I liked the results, here is a before and after picture of my daughter, along with a little clean up on her stray hair, let me know what you think...
