Since Rawshooter Essentials does not support the RAW files of my current camera I'm looking for an alternative to the RSE/PS7 combination I've been using for the past few years. I'm not really all that interested in or good at PP and the trial versions of Lightroom and Corel Paintshop Photo Pro run frustratingly slowly on my PC. So, I've been looking at ACDSee Pro 3 which has a nice interface and seems to offer reasonable functionality. Anybody got any comments to make about it? I'd also welcome any suggestions about other software. I like the idea of an all-in-one viewer/RAW converter/editor.

Cheers,
Qiki

I have the pro 2 version, 2-3 years old. It was notoriously buggy (crashes), and they never did anything to fix it.

That doesn't mean it still is, but I suggest you use the trial period to its full extent!

I have ACDSee Pro 3 and it's much better than the version 2.5 I was running earlier. My plans are to use it more for categorizing/keywording my photo libraries, but have yet found time for that project. :-) I have used it to convert some RAW files from my Sony A700 and A55 cameras and it does a nice job from what I can tell at this point. I still use primarily my vendor app's for RAW conversion, and/or SilkyPix (which I really like for RAW to TIFF conversions). Nearly all PP is done in PSP X2 (working with TIFF's or straight JPG's).

Summary:
ACDSee Pro 3 is good, and if you need a limited web presence (they offer free gallery hosting), it may be a good choice for you. Like Neil said...maximize the trial period. Also, read their forums for items that are of interest/concern to you.

SilkyPix has been my go to since Rawshooter went away. It flies under the radar IMO and is worth consideration.

I've not used either one of the above much past converting from RAW to TIFF. PSP X2 is my tool for PP.

Good luck!

I use ACDsee for keywording archiving and viewing my shots, works nice. Lightroom as a batch converter for the RAW files. PS for advanced editing. Hope this helps.

Might also be worth checking out Bibble or free alternatives like Gimp or Picasa.

Another one I like and have used for years (though less so lately) is ThumbsPlus by Cerious software.

ACD is well known in the imaging market but I personally wouldn't trust my images to their software. For Mac users, ACDSee Pro is especially frustrating, as it has been in beta an unusually looooong time for such a common-task package. Thankfully there are many other DAM options for both Windows and Mac users.

I use (and love) iView, which was renamed Expression Media when Microsoft bought it. Expression Media (iView) is now at Phase One and they got it before Microsoft had a chance to screw it up.
Expression Media

You can import your images out of the camera or off the card w/o it messing up your exif for DPC. It reads pretty much all the files I have run through it and it catalogues images too. It can also do video. You can download a free trial.

You may also want to check out Zoner Photo Studio. I upgraded to 13 and I really like it. My biggest need was organizing my hundreds and hundreds of photos and this does the job quite nicely. These site is zoner.com.

Before I went over to Lightroom for their keywording functions I used BreezeBrowser and their downloader. It is very fast with minimal system demands, and much more intuitive than Lightroom, ACDSee, or Bridge or any other browser I ever used.

I also like Picassa, for its lightweight and the ability to find stuff on other computers since it is freeware and lets you run it on as many boxes as you like.
