I am trying to save images to a SD card. I was able to save the first few which I did as a test (to put into a digital photo frame and see if it worked). I've gone back to download the rest and I'm getting an error message...

The root of Drive E is formatted with the FAT tile system and can only store a limited number of items. Store the items in a subfolder or format the driving using the NTFS system.

Huh? I've saved things to SD or Compact Flash card many many times and have never seen this. FYI --- some images are photographs I've taken -- some are images that I've saved off of the internet (for personal viewing no other use). Not sure how that could matter as the first batch that worked was these kinds of images but I thought I'd at least mention what I'm trying to save.

Help! Anyone have any clue?

The original FAT16 file system has a serious limitation on how many files it could have in the root folder. Maximum 512 files and it could be even less depending on variables. It's possible that the SD card was accidentally formatted with this obsolete file system. Reformat the card and make sure you format it as FAT32, which does not have that limitation.

Thank you so much! Sorry to be dense -- how do I reformat the card?

Just like Yo_Spiff said. You don't need to reformat though. Simply create a folder and put everything in that folder. Problem solved.

Put it in your computer's card reader and when it shows up as a drive, right click and select format. Make sure FAT32 is selected as the file system to use.

If the problem is due to being formatted with the FAT16 file system, then he should reformat it properly with FAT32.

I thought it was usually recommended to format the card in the camera in which it's to be used -- there should be a format command in one of the setup menus.

True, but something is messed up at this point. Perhaps being formatted in a computer was the problem in the first place. Since the OP has not checked back in recently, perhaps he has it solved.
