So I'm trying to figure out the best way of working with my RAW files. I like the noise reduction in Canon's DPP, but it takes so long to transfer to photoshop, and it comes over as a tiff. Yet the photos load fast than they do in bridge. But in Bridge, before opening in the raw editor, you can view the photos full size and look through them and rate, keyword, whatever before working with the file.

So what do you do? Canon DPP? Photoshop's Raw editor? What do you use to preview your files while deciding which ones to keep/trash?

I shoot RAW + Small JPG, so I can preview using Explorer (jpgs) and Edit in Photoshop (RAW)

I use Noise Ninja to reduce noise if necessary.

I used Canon DPP for awhile but now use bridge instead. With bridge I can view and trash as I go.

Yes, I like that feature, since I take way too many photos. However bridge is awfully slow on my computer.

Then you need a faster computer. Bridge isn't even CLOSE to slow on my machine, and it's nothing special.

I use DPP's "Edit image window" (select all files, press button) to preview and select images.
For images I want to delete I set 'check mark 3', images that are INCREDIBLE(!) I set 'check mark 1' (alt-3, alt-1).

When I'm done with all the images I use Edit -> 'Select check mark3 images only' and press delete :).

I do post-processing in CS4, using Noiseware Pro when necessary.

I like IrfanView it's pretty nice, and very quick. (with admittedly odd controls, like ctrl-H to make 1:1 and F5 to fit to screen)

Then I use PS's RAW converter to open into PS.

The usually my first editing step is to make a new layer, and run Topaz De-Noise 5 on that layer.

Do you find that using the noise reduction in DPP reduces image sharpness? I especially see this on portraits. The eyes especially lose sharpness, but I like what it does to skin. What do you all do to keep from losing image sharpness with noise reduction?

I use DPP as well. I initially put myu images in a temp folder, and review them from DPP. Rather thanuse the rating buttons, the ones I think are keepers get immediately moved to a permanent folder. One nice thing is that DPP integrates with Windows file manager. If I drag the file from the DPP thumbnail window to anopther folder it moves or copies just as it would from a file manager window. When I make my adjustments in DPP, I export as a TIF or JPG and then do the rest of the editing in PaintShop Pro.

DPP allows you to adjust a shot for contrast, sharpness, tone, curves, white balance, adjust to monochrome, etc. and apply that to a set of your choice.

Besides, the only way you can truly be a macho photographer is to use a view camera with wet plates and all the stuff you have to drag around to support it. That's how REAL men do it.

I have never used DPP other than to experiment with it. Yes, Bridge used to be pretty slow on the hardware of the day, but should be relatively quick on modern hardware. But *any* RAW software is going to take a little time to render images at full resolution, even Lr (Lightroom) running on a modern, 64-bit machine takes a perceptible moment to render.
IMO, the Adobe Raw Converter (ACR) engine used in Ps Bridge and Lr is the gold standard in functionality, and is first-class with respect to NR. I strongly recommend Lr as a workflow tool for import, sort, keyword, and RAW conversion.
