Well I joined the CC to try and give a little something back. I don't have the time generally to vote on whole challenges, and I am rubbish at trying to vote without leaving a comment so it ends up taking a really long time. I reckoned that through the CC I could give something back in short time spells...

I didn't, however, expect:

To be finding so much interest in the way people set their shots up.
To learn so much about what this variation in settings actually does.
To find myself hunting through users portfolios to find out why they did what they did.
To discover new ideas while doing the above.
To get so many kind PMs from those critiqued.

For me, the CC has not changed everything about the way I view my photography, but it has made me re-think what message I am trying to get across and what sort of material I really want to shoot. So what has the CC ever done for you?

Ref. Monty Python for the title, in case it wasn't obvious!!

Though I have not participated in CC, I have done something similar. For a long time I made myself leave an explanatory comment on anything that I gave a 4 or 5 to, and I only voted my 20% or so because of the time that took. Commenting on the midrange entries is the hardest because it is not always easy to nail down why it does not work for you. What you have found is the same thing I did. By making yourself think about why a shot does or does not work for you, you learn things that you can apply to your own photography, as well as getting to know others on the site.

For me the CC changed everything I thought about as photography. A simple comment on one of my earliest entries said "All of us need to do some post processing on our photos". If I remember correctly it was in a challenge titled 'Calendar'. I honestly had no clue what this man was talking about.

Then I started a journey that NEVER ceased to satisfy my need for knowing more. The difference between photography and DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY is more than an old BC guy could comprehend. But what a journey.

For me the CC changed the known world, and that is a fact.

I wish I could plow back.

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the CC ever done for us?

There's no pleasing some people! :P

I, for one, have gotten some very insightful feedback from my Critique Club comments. It has given me insight into what others see when viewing my photographs and also causes me to look at my subject matter a little differently. Most of all, I reinforces how crappy I am at post processing, lol. I've actually going back and where possible, try to take the critiques and see if I can improve some of those shots.

Thanks all!!

I'd say that I get pretty much exactly what you describe, Frank. I've always been pretty meticulous when I look at photos, but the CC has helped me to apply it to my own photography, before the shot. Perhaps it's just that I've been developing in that respect anyway on my own, but I think joining has helped me in that because I look at first impressions of photos, then I look at composition, and then evaluate the nuances and details. I think it's a great opportunity, and a great way to help new users especially, and I really enjoy that aspect.
