Anybody know a good site for ringtones that is reputable and has a lot of f/x tones? I'm not looking to have Lady Gaga shouting out while I'm in the room with a patient. I want a nice soothing sound, but it seems like these are difficult to find. Does anybody know what format tones are? Can I just record my own?

What type of phone do you have? Any android phone or the iphone will let you use mp3s as your ringtone...

Most are mp3 or mp4. So, yeah, you can record or snip your own from music you have. You'll usually want them under 30 or 40 seconds.

iPhones ringtones are m4r, which is an mp4 ... ie ringtone.mp4 renamed to ringtone.m4r

Are you talking about balls again? I don't think I can take it anymore.

I have a Droid 2. Ya, maybe I'll come up with something nice on my keyboard at home and record it.

Droid phones will use standard mp3 files... so no problem. Just keep it around 30 seconds or less.

And I assume if I want silence between the tone I have to record that? 2 second tone, 6 seconds silence, etc.?

Correct or add the silence in post, using Audacity or other audio editors.

OK, I'm having way too much fun with this. Thanks for the help! Especially Leroy.

i know it is not what you are after, but considering your line of work, i think a recording of someone sneezing, a big ole' snort, clearing their throat, and "hocking" out a big one would be hilarious.

I make my own. I have this special work ringtone. They like to phone me on my days off just to ask stupid questions and I've been telling them not to do that for a long time, they don't care. So I made a 30 second soundless ringtune. I never know when they call and end up getting a message on my voice mail, which I only retrieve when I'm at work.

As for soft un-obtrusive ringtones I use snippets of very soft instrumental music. I also bring down the volume level at the beginning of the ringtone so it starts very quietly slowly working up to full volume so it doesn't alert the whole room that I'm receiving a call.

Both most excellent ideas. I will definitely work these into my next batch. :)
