I have $800 at most to spend on a new camera, I was wondering what people thought of this Camera. I could afford some accessories with it too! Tell me what you think.

Sorry THAT camera

May I add that's $800 Canadian?

What camera?

If you want to spend $800, you'd want to spend I guess no more than $500 on a camera. I don't know anyone that has bought a camera and NOT gone over-budget.

I don't know a lot about point-and-shoots, but I'd be tempted to go for a Sony F717, which are fairly cheap now, because the F828 has been released (although the 828 is noisier). Practically any Canon or Nikon that fits your price range (and ergonomics, etc) will probably be good.

One thing's for sure, check out DPReview, which will compare cameras in the same price range.

Edit: Fixed double-negative. :)

As Paul said no one has not gone under budget. Execellent Camera, I love mine and glad I went that route However if you are doing day trips:

Does not come with a Bag, Trekker Mini cost me $60.

The included 64M CF, not so useful. I got (2) 512s, you are shooting 3M JPEGs 8M RAW pics. You need at least (1) 512 to have any fun with it.

58mm UV filter a must, with Exta Lens caps (get keepers for the lens caps). I got UV and Circular Polarizer. Semi ND filter built in to camera.

I got 1 extra battery, and have not had any issues with draining them before filling the (2) 512M CF's

I got a new Comfortable, Longer Strap.

800 becomes 1100 quickly.

You will indeed need a 512MB card, but that's probably the only other upfront expense. You can get a relatively slow Viking or SanDisk card for around $50, and add a faster one at Christmas (hint, hint). The included battery is quite powerful, with plenty of juice for an average day of shooting between charges. The Pro1 is far more compact than the Sony F717, and there are plenty of suitable bags in the $20-30 range. Polarizers and specialized straps are luxuries that you won't need right away. Happy shopping.

The best bet for image quality in your price range is probably the Olympus C-8080. Street price of about $735. Read reviews here: mexapixel.net where it received the highest rating for Image Quality of any 8MP cam; and here: DPReview where it got the site's best rating "Highly Recommended".

Too good to be true prices ususally are. I'd try to get some info about that site before I bought off of it. I've heard bad things about similar sites before.

Ok, I take that back. It looks like that site has solid reviews at bizrate.

And if you are thinking to go under that price and get a bit more extras I advise you to try a Fuji Finepix S7000. A great 6 megapixel camera with lots of control. I could'nt reach it but if I was trying to buy a fairly compact camera with excellent image qualaty I did't think twice on buying it. And with the new 8 MP in the marquet the 6 MP should drop prices.

Compare it in the usual critique sites and take a look at pictures taken with it.

Ah... didn't see your Canadian edit. In that case, I 'd take a good look at the Canon PowerShot S1 IS. It's roughly the same specs as the Fuji S5000, but with the benefit of newer technology vs. the older Fuji model. You'll get image stabilization, the best movie mode available, better/faster focusing, etc. Here's a good review for you.

the S5000 is a great camera. i think you can probably pick up a good deal on ebay on one. if you're looking for something with a little bit more manual control, you can take a step back (sorta back) to the S602, which is an AWESOME camera, and can be had on eBay for a really good deal right now.

i'd also agree on the overbudget thing. if you have 800CDN to spend on a cam, only spend 500 cuz you will spend a ton on other stuff like filters, bag, strap, batteries, memory, etc etc etc :)
