First let me say I'm very happy with my score for Desaturation -- it's my first attempt at using that technique. But, what's up with the 1s and 2s? Let me know, willya?

Here's my entry:

Do you think it would have scored better if I had:

1. cropped out the grass on top (left it in for DoF cue and contrast)
2. desatted the gull's feet (the idea was the water "coloring" the bird)
3. desatted all but the spigot the gull was trying to drink from

Thanks for any input, and, thanks to everyone who left me a comment!

1 AND 2 OR 3

Your idea is cool, but the photo didn't convey that idea so specifically. I would've scored it higher (gave it a 5) if you'd done either 2 or 3.

Without the grass and with the feet desaturated, I would have scored it higher...I gave it a 6 during the challenge. I like the yellow in the beak, it adds some zing. :o)

i shouldn't be too concerned about scoring those three ones and twos - even our glorious blue-ribbon winner managed to accumalate one of each. it kind of just comes with the territory.

i agree with the above comments, that your proposals for improving the image would have improved the image (except the third one, i liked the taps) - but then looking in retrospect is always easier (i don't think i've had one submission where i've gone "oooh, i wish i did that..."

i am afraid i also only gave you a six - i liked it, i just felt there was a little too much negative space and thought more focus / attention should have been on the action part around the birds head...

You got one 1, two 2s, and no 3s, and you think that's something that requires explanation? :-) I'm sure you know that there are a few people here who rarely ever rate anything higher than a 3, so you will almost always get a low score from them. Also, personal taste and subjectivity will always result in even your most beautiful photos rubbing someone the wrong way.

That gull picture was really nice - I gave it a 7. You should be proud of it and not even slightly worried about the 3 people who rated it lower than you would have liked. Congrats on a great photo and a great score.

I like it as is but do think it would improve with the grass cropped out. As to what to desaturate and what not to, you could leave just the beak in color (the color is such a great contrast to the rest) or leave as is. Forget what I rated this but I know I like it. Ann

Actually, I really love this picture. I always look at a photo more for what it stands for. I love the way the seagull, something so natural, seems to be intruding on human territory, when really its always humans intruding.

this is really a good pic, but the gras should have been cropped out.

Every challenge I've entered..including a 2nd place finish and a 7th place finish...I got scores of 1's and 2's.

Always scratch my head on that...but no bother. People are people
don't let it bother you.
