I mean really, does this lady not realise the consequences of her actions?
She should think about what she does before she does it!
Let me tell you why............
Yesterday while traveling home I stumbled upon an informal settlement fire (Gauteng - South Africa S26 01.422 E27 57.655). I stopped to take photo's. I was the only photographer there and stayed for two hours while the fire service battled to get it under control. Once all was done, I raced home, uploaded the photo's and got hold of our local newspaper. They were keen to see the pic's as they did not have any of the blaze. They contacted me to let me know that they were going to use one and they were, considering it for the front page.
Naturally me jumping the gun (it was my first time being published in the press) told everybody I know.

Well this morning I woke up, raced to the newspaper seller and what do I see but......... Lady Gaga wearing a dress made of meat!

Surely someone should tell these people about the consequences of their actions! If anyone has her number, please send it to me as I feel she needs a good telling off!

P.s. My photo made it onto page three of the Citizen newspaper for those that are locals. I am still really chuffed and glad that I decided to stop and take photo's.

Some of us would think you don't think about the consequences of your actions either. If hobby shooters didn't give their good stuff away just for the excitement of being published, maybe there'd be a few more pro newspaper shooters with jobs? :-D

Ummm, did anyone say he gave it away? Anyway he was the only one taking photos so it's not like he was (heaven forbid) undercutting a real pro.

Congratulations, walbland on getting your shot published. Pity you were upstaged.

Now if Lady Gaga was cooking the meat in the fire... that would have been a good shot!

Tricky ... I can see where you are coming from ... but its a supply and demand kinda thing too ... in the old days there we far less good photographers if for no other reason than the equipment and processes formed a barrier to entry. These days as you can see on DP there are lots of very good photographers and keeping their price high as it were is I would suggest a tad artificial.

Maybe your'e right we shouldn't give stuff away there are plenty of forums for showing of our images even if we can't sell 'em .... though I think the demise of the pro is almost inevitable for your'e everday type of shot as those little pocket cameras keeping getting better (worse?) at making photographing decisions for us.

WD on getting published. P3 is no mean feet!
Do you eat meat? :)
They should pay you for your work. I'm told that a front page image can fetch R4000-00 or so locally...not that I'm looking but I have friends in the game.

My dog would love to eat a dress made out of meat....

What, the meat dress thing again? That is so old. Back in the 80s there there was a meat dress, a much better dress than whatzername's which looks rather clunky by comparison, hanging in the Art Gallery in Ottawa. It was hanging there and slowly rotting away. Caused a huge stir at the time. I remember seeing it, in the flesh. Literally ;-}

Anyway pity you were upstaged by a poptart, but congrats anyway!

Ah, yep!

* I heard afterward she held a "meat & greet"

* Betcha she took a "ribbing" from some folks; made her wonder if wearing it was a mis-steak!

* When she wore it home, she *really* brought home the bacon.

* Yikes, I can almost see her tenderloins!

* Boy, she sure is well-marbled!

Ok, I know, stop already!

I think those days are going, going...almost gone.

Think about your average wedding shooter. 20 years ago, you hired a photographer to do your wedding, and those were your only shots, love 'em or leave 'em. Nowadays, there's 25 other family members and relatives all taking P&S stills and video that they're handing over to the couple. Sure, they may not be of the quality that the pro shot, but there's going to be some perspective that the pro missed. Simple as that.

Media will have to evolve. Most of the pro wedding shooters are adding some sort of video to their packages, have you noticed? Adapt and survive, or be eaten. Could you really blame a GWC if he/she gives away a Pulitzer-worthy photo because he/she was excited about hitting the front page of The Times?

Media will indeed have to evolve. There will be less diversity because the pubs will just buy pix from a central pool for the national/international ones and crowdsource the locals. Aren't Pulitzers awarded without needing to be a working pro, just that it's published? Probably should look it up.

Here's some interesting reading on the fate of microstock contributors. Pro photographers have long been their worst enemies. Link Here
