I need a fast canon wide prime around 28mm or 35mm. Do any of you know the Sigma 28mm F1.8 II Aspherical canon???

Does it work well with canon? I would prefer the canon 28mm usm, but I hear its soft wide open and I intend to use it at 1.8

I also hear bad reviews on the sigma 30mm 1.4, focusing issues and all. And thats only an EF-S lens. But if I were cobnvinced the reviews were'nt accurate, i'd consider it.

I've been admiring that lens, but haven't taken the time to research it, so I'm definitely watching this thread.

Not sure what your timeline and/or budget is, but Zeiss just announced the forthcoming 35mm 1.4 Distagon T*ZE. Expensive (of course) and not available until Q1 2011...

Thats probably another manual focus zeiss. I want autofocus and would never buy that zeiss, over the canon 35mm 1.4L. But the L is over my budget. I dont want to spend more than $450

Yes, it's an MF lens... and I agree that I'd take the 35L over the Zeizz unless the Zeiss proves outright legendary; the jury is still out on that one though.
On your target budget, you may well want to consider the Canon 35/2. It's about $319, and it is an old design, so no USM (noisy focus, sounds like an insect) but optically it is a pretty darn good lens.
I know nothing about the "Stigma" 28/1.8; I've seen results from the Canon 28/1.8 on a 5D and I was not impressed; on APS-C it will be better (the corners are where it's worst).

Ok! Just got off the phone with the tech guy from the store. He says the Sigma 28mm wont work properly with the digital Canons. I may get an err and it was designed for the film cameras. He does'nt recommend it, he recommends the DG models.

So Kirkic, I may as well look at the Canon 35mm f2 or the sigma 30mm f1.4, or hope Canon magically release a wide prime at photokina :)

But I'm not keen on spending that much on a Sigma. I only considered the 28mm because it was $179

I have the Sigma 30 mm 1.4 and think it is wonderful. I took a 2 week trip to Italy with a Tamron 17-50, Sigma 10-20, 50 mm 1.8 and it was by far my most used lens. I rarely see any focusing issues, although it will miss focus on occasion, but I shoot would shoot inside dark buildings all the time with no problem. You could always try it and return it.

I love my 28mm f1.8 Canon.

Even on FF, it's just starting what I'd consider wide angle. Unless you get into "L" prime glass, you're not going to get a WA lens that's razor sharp wide open...even then, there are shortcomings

I'm no hardware expert but I really like this lens

Canon 24mm f2.8

I know it culd be faster but these were taken in very dark conditions - (they had forgotten to bring the spotlights)

I'd love to try one, because f1.4 would really be preferred. But Being in Jamaica, I have to jump through a lot of hoops to get gear here. So I have to try n get it right the first time.

The 24mm 2.8 is just too slow for me. So right now its down to canon 35mm f2, canon 28mm f1.8 or the sigma 30mm f1.4

Try this tool.. I preset it for the 28mm and 30mm you are looking at... For my money it would be the sigma all the way.

Thanks! I use that tool at times. But i'm not too confident in it, as I heard they just get random lens off the street and not recertified lens straight from the manufacturer. Of course I could be wrong.

Which are you going to buy? A recertified lens or one off the street? (they often test multiple lenses there, you'll notice a box to select the lens# if they have more than one..)

I think it might be more useful to actually test "real" lenses..

I have the Sigma 28mm f1.8 and it's a decent lens for the price

I dont have the luxury of testing. I dont live in the US and its difficult getting stuff to Jamaica. I have to do whatever is necessary to get it right the first time. I've also played that return game with sigma, hoping to hit the jackpot three times now.

I'm pretty sure i could get a good working sigma. But now that I remember the sigma incident. I think I'll just narrow it down to the two canons :)
