Its high time I get a flash for my Canon T1i. I don't want the 580EX or the 220EX. I think the 430EX is pretty good. But not really sure about the practical difference between the original and the II variant. I checked out a few sites and the difference doesn't seem to be much.. except for the faster recycling time and a metal foot.

But one of the point that is being highly debated is the master/slave switch. Is this so critical to consider?

430EX II is not available in India yet. But my brother will be returning to India from the US for Christmas and I can ask him to grab a 430EX II. The price for 430EX is about 15k in India and the price for the II variant in the US is "only" about 11k($230).

Have any of you guys used both of these? Should I get the II variant or am I better off getting the original version from here.

I have the first version and I am quite happy with it. I do tend to be careful with it, because I know if I whack it against something, that plastic foot it a weak point. No actual problems, however. I have not made any use of the master slave switch.

If you can get the 430exII then I think that would be the better move.

If you can afford the 580exII then i would suggest you move in that direction as it gives you an extra stop of light and that will be useful to bounce light and use modifiers.

Yes. The 580exII is better for sure. But its almost $200 more or almost double the cost of 430exII. Does that cost really justify going for 580exII. The price difference Canon has put on these is huge!

I have the 430ex and the 430 exii. I had to get the exii because I shoot with the pocketwizard tt5 transcievers and the ex was emitting too much interference. Outside of that, the exii comes with metal mount which is much better and seems to recycle faster than the ex.

I would get the exii or the 580exii (if you dont plan to use the pocket wizards).

I am not going to recommend here, but a little advice to plan for the future.
Right now you might need the 430, in the future you might need something that do some HyperSync and weather sealed.
Cheers,
