for the past 3 years or so Ive been using a pretty basic laptop for all my image editing mainly raw processing (the likes of photo-shopping etc), this laptop doesn't have a proper graphics card but Ive never found things to be lagging in anyway other than limitations of the ram and processor.

Soon I'm going to be buying a new laptop, and there's a model that looks really really good for the money, however it doesn't have a graphics card, my question: With the new technology, IE core i5 processor and DDR3 memory, will not having a graphics card be a limiting factor?

Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

What software are you using? Some software, such as recent versions of PhotoShop, can offload some functions to the GPU as well as taking advantage of multiple processor cores. I don't think the lack of a discrete GPU will be a limiting factor, but having one *may* speed up some tasks. So, the answer is, "it depends".

Go with dedicated video not integrated video. You computer will only be as good as it's weakest link.
How much are you looking to put into the laptop?

I'm currently using free software, gimp etc, but looking to take use of student discount on photoshop cs5, (normal not extended I wont be needing any of the 3D aspects, only ACR and things like layer masks). The laptop will be used mostly for university stuff, normal word processing, maybe some \'bigger software\' but id expect nothing more intensive than photoshop. The budget is around £600-£650 (or $940-$1010), however I\'m finding that i can get better laptops for around the £520 mark ($820) namely the Toshiba L505-144 for £520 ($820) or an ACER AS5740-523G32MN for £500 ($860)

Both have DDR3 ram at 1066 speed, and a 320GB 5400rpm harddrive
the Toshiba L505 has 4GB of ram, an i5 430M processor, a 512mb graphics card (£520/$820)
and the Acer has 3GB of ram, an i5 520M processor and no graphics card (£500/$780)

According to these specs, its feasible that there should be a laptop that is i5 520M, 4GB ram, with graphics card and maybe even 7200rpm harddrive for around £650/$1010, however nothing like that can be found as far as i can see. To be honest if the graphics card isnt a big problem, the Acer seems to be a steal for the price.

Any ideas?
