Use multiple images stitched together horizontally or vertically to show off a dramatic scene or landscape.
Advanced editing
Extra rules: The images used must overlap and be part of the same general scene. (Wording would need to be worked out on this)

Inspiration for this topic came from this article. Not like I never thought of this before but it inspired me to post this topic:

For anyone running Windows who hasn't tried this before, AutoStitch is available in a free, demo version, and also has been incorporated into some commercial products (links on their page). There are no instructions or fancy interface, but most of it is pretty obvious to use.

You can see some examples in my Panorama gallery.

Note that it's really easy to get something very wide and skinny. To get any height, you probably need to make more than one horizontal pass with the camera, and/or shoot in portrait orientation.

A tripod with a pan head is good, but panos can be successfully made handheld as well; these are composited from more than ten frames each:

Hell yes, it's time we did a pano challengechallenges! Most especially since the stated reason for not allowing it in Advanced was so we could run special challenges using the technique.

ETA: I agree with Paul, you don't need any special equipment, and stitchers like autostitch make it really easy. It's entirely feasible to shoot panos handheld, heck I've been doing it for most of a decade.

Yeah. I suggested this in 2009, and someone else suggested it in 2007. They no likey for some reason.

One possible reason is that it might require special re-coding to allow pictures wider than 800 pixels just for this challenge.

I was in favor of the smaller challenge image sizes back when we took the polls, but even I'd favor something like 800x1200 <400KB for this one. Don't really want a 1200 pixel vertical pano though ... :-(

Panoramas don't have to be only vertically merged or horizontally. Sometimes you need to do both in order to get the full picture.

The stairs here are 180 degrees apart. This is 18 pictures merged together.

As far as the 800 pixels... You can still show a panorama at 800 pixels. You just wont have the same clarity. I think panoramas should be allowed in basic editing.

One downside to doing a challenge is that not everyone has the software to merge pictures. The challenge would effectively exclude those people. Nobody likes to be excluded.

There should be free software out there on the web for everyone.

BTW:

180 degrees with 8 exposures
