Hey all,
For those of you that use the Nikon D100, Do you have recommended settings, or internal tweaks you use outside the factory settings?
Is there anything you would say a relative amateur should use?
Are there settings that were the default that you think should never be used as the default?
My issue is that there are a ton of little tweaks, and I don't know if I am getting the best out of my awesome new camera.
Any feedback would be great!!! |

It may help to indicate what you want to use the camera for...
Most tweaks and customisation to settings are for specific purposes and suit certain types of shooting but hamper others.

Hello and congrats on getting the D100! Here's a link that I came across recently: Nikon D100 Custom Settings
It explains what some of the settings does and the author indicates which settings he uses as well as the reasons. In my opinion, a very informative page! Also take a look at other pages of the same website. Hope this helps you in some way. :-)

Put it in auto mode, then gradually take one setting at a time and take manual control over it -- learning as much as needed with each setting to become comfortable with it.
I would start with the aperature set to manual first, but that is just me. What setting you choose depends on what you already know and what you are wanting to accomplish (no point learning about a control that plays a minimal role in your photography, at the beginning anyway). If you already know some controls from a previous camera, start with one of them and see how they differ, then move on as your photos encourage you to do so.
Contrary to what some will say, there is nothing wrong with shooting in full (or near full) auto until you are comfortable with the camera. Learn each control to the point of being comfortable with it, and then move on to the next. Have fun.

I just reviewed the custom setting in the web page suggested (thanks TabbyCat!) and agree completely. I have my custom settings exactly as he recommends.
You might also look at this article by Moose Peterson - with particular emphasis on his discussion of White Balance.

photom/Tom, that's a good article! Great for new D100 owners or people who are thinking of getting a D100. Thanks for posting the link.

A Short Course in Nikon D100 (by Dennis P. Curtin)
Complete Guide to the Nikon D100 (by Thom Hogan)
Both contain helpful sections on settings.
