So I took a trip to New York and took a portrait shot of this saxophone player. I want to make it landscape, but I think the crop looks awkward. I made two copies and am wondering which is better, and why?

I'm not sure I'm understanding the second crop. It looks like it has some strange things going on.

I like the cropped shot a bit more. The murky reflection on the right side of the lower option doesn't really contribute anything to story presented by the image, and I think removing it strengthens the image.

This isn't really a crop at all, but rather a border..

The landscape image has what I believe to be a cut and expanded version of the original image used as a reverse-letterbox frame..

IMHO? The square image is much better, as your border hurts my eyes, and I lose the lovely detail of the image..

I much prefer the un-bordered image. The one with borders draws the eyes to blurry borders first to figure out what is going on, then to wonder "why?" and it almost forces a "dismissal" of the actual image content. It kinda goes like this: is he leaning against a window, is that a reflection? no, it is isn't, its just a shopped thing--ah, same thing on the left. done.

The no border version simply shows the image itself, which is nice. No distractions.

Love the border-less one better. I actually like how you tried to change the crop by duplicating some elements and adding a blur, but I agree with the other that it's a little distracting.

However, I know you were not trying to show it off, but the top one gets a fav from me.

I would have liked a bit more space at the top, but overall a nice crop..
