Tentative plans:

Dates: September 4th & 5th, 2010

Saturday Sept. 4th:

*0730 Meet for breakfast 0730 at:
Denny's, at 7120 S COCKRELL HILL DALLAS, TX 75236 (location #2 on the linked map)

This will give us plenty of time to talk photo stuff and get to meet all the faces we've only known online.

*1000-1300 (10am to 1pm for those that were never in the military) Commemorative Air Force Warbirds on Parade Airshow

*1300-whenever Get some lunch (Does Chili's sound good?) and then head over to DeRidder Antiques in Forney. It's not your normal antique store. Willy Deridder has always been very welcoming to the local Flickr group and she enjoys seeing how we appreciate the items in her shop in a different way than most folks. The shop is composed of several large warehouses and in the middle of the day you will get some wonderful filtered light from the skylights in the ceiling.

A warm welcome by Yo Spiff, on Flickr

For more information on what you can find at this place, here is My DeRidder set on Flickr and a Music video that a member of the Flickr group put together using our meetup photos. (That's me rolling on the floor at 2:25)

Sunday Sept. 5th:

1130-1300ish: Saturday is going to be a big day, so lets Sleep in a bit and meet about 1130 for lunch at the Ol' South Pancake House in Fort Worth. This should be early enough to beat the church crowds.

1300-whenever: Hit the Fort Worth Stockyards where the Old West still lives. There is a scheduled reenactment of a cattle drive every day at 1630, and you can also catch some great pics of the vintage railroad that runs between Grapevine and the Stockyards. I like to position myself out by the bridges where the railroad enters and leaves the stockyards. If we are lucky, we can catch the antique steam engine, though it does not always run and sometimes we get a more modern diesel locomotive. For $10, you can ride it for the Trinity River Run at 1530.

Note: Many of the folks who portray the historical characters at the stockyards do so for a living and tipping is appropriate.

Evening: Open to ideas if everyone is not burned out at this point in the weekend.

That would be great. Not sure yet which of the 2 cities we would meet in. Depends on what is new and different for most of the folks.

MAYBE...you could get Judy and Sandy to drive up for it. :) Even Yanko...they can all ride w/Roseanne, lol. It would be fun to have Austin represented, no matter how many show! I've never met Love!

Is there a difference between Dallas / Ft. Worth?

Depending on dates I may make it.

Fort Worth is where the West begins.
Dallas is where the East peters out.

Ok, here goes the OFFENDED. How DARE you ask that. Yes there is a difference. Fort Worth is a much homier city than Dallas. It has a small town feel with the advantages of a bigger city. Now, that's all for my offended self.

My sister lives in Dallas and the rest of the family here in Fort Worth. My family has been here 10 generations and has been an important part of my home town's history. Dallas is much more of a 'big city' vibe to me but I'm really loyal to my home town.

I'm in but think that was probably a given since my other half suggested it. Am excited about getting to meet other DPCers that liveish my area.

Are you saying we are homies?

There's 30 miles between the two downtowns, if that helps answer the question any better.
07/06/2010 05:51:04 PM · #14
Yes, honey! We are homies and I have the mortgage papers to prove it.

Judy Jutilda lives just a couple of miles from me and Sandy SandyP is just an hour away so we could definitely carpool if either of them would like to. : )

I need some input. Would folks prefer this to be a 1-day thing, or for the weekend? If for the whole weekend, we can plan some things on both sides of the fence. Dallas one day and Ft. Worth the other. If just one day, choices will need to be made.

We can post some ideas for local places that the out of towners may desire to photograph while here. For those of us who live here, well, we know where the good spots are.

My best suggestion is a weekend thing so that during hottest part of the day we can go inside. There are some outstanding museums to see along with some wonderful parks, plays, restaurants, etc. The Texas heat is still and issue so let's think smartly. The weekend of the 24th does NOT work for us but you can pick any other one.

If we do it as a 2 day/weekend trip with perhaps just 1 nights stay here then perhaps dusk and dawn shoots would be fun. Along with them we can fill the hours with visiting and seeing a few sights.

What do you guys want to do? I'm ready to help plan anything. I love the town I grew up in and really enjoy showing it off. \
