Let me be the first one to say that I hate this idea. One of the things that I really like about this site is that you are given a sort of theme that everyone should stick to. There are dozens of other sites that allow this "free study" idea.

I think this is going to be really difficult for me. I'm not creative enough to come up with a really good idea without someplace to start off thinking. I guess my idea right now is to go to a museum or two and see if I can find something to imitate, or at least to help me focus on a personal theme a bit more.

Chariot,

Although I'm looking forward to the "lack" of challenge this week, I am in agreeance with you.

However, if they didn't do this, they'd just have people clamoring for it week after week. At least we can do it and get it out of the way.

*grin*

I'm kinda going both ways on this too. I like the idea of anything goes...but then again, what I really like about this site is that each week is sort of an "assignment". I like that aspect of it. Oh well...good luck everyone.

I do like the freedom though this week ... we should all have some excellent shots ... go out there and shoot what you do best ... this week is kinda like a talent show ... be proud in what you shoot and share ... should be fun this week :)

I love the freedom that has been given this week. It provides unlimited potential and creativity, I hope this will generate some serious 'shots' resulting in stiff competition.

Win? I think it's a great idea... you will have someone every week who does not like the challenge topic... Maybe the challenge suggestion area will start getting some more input this week :)

Let's See..."Free Study", ...Does this mean if it costs any money it does not meet the challenge?.....(I couldn't resist)

I can't wait to see the comments this week. "This doesn't depict anything free, and it wasn't taken in a study. Sorry, it doesn't fit the challenge."

phew, i'm not alone. i looked at the monitor last night and went 'oh my god'. not that i don't like the idea. but usually, my mind starts churning trying to figure out how to meet the challenge, this time it was just churning aimlessly! :) i was mentally going through places i've always wanted to go back to to take photos ...

while i may not be as excited about having to come up with my photo idea (i always work better when told what to do - but i'm going away for the weekend and was planning on taking lots of photos anyway, so the timing is good for this challenge) i'm REALLY looking forward to voting on this challenge because i expect to see some really awesome photos!

good luck everyone! :)

Isn't this one going to be really hard to score? I mean, if I take a good shot of a topic everybody complains about...let's say, my dog...and someone else sets up a studio shot... well, how're you going score that fairly. Guess it's just one week or summer vacation!
07/08/2002 11:51:18 AM · #14
Maybe it is good in that it will give people a chance to look at each photo at face value, which alot of us have been "clamoring" for. Then again, we'll probably get the same "too many doggies, kitties..." comments anyway! ;0)
I'm bummin' that I took some portraits last night (in my signature below: Ad Free!) that I can't use for the free study now! ... and my "model" is going out of town! Ah well, I'm sure I'll come up with something else.

Im really puzzled that people would find this challenge difficult. I thought that everyone had some sort of favorite subject(s) to photograph. All you have to do is take a photo that you like.

Maybe the challenge concept is having a negative effect... Is it possible that people, after working on challenges for a long time, would get to the point where they couldn't come up with a subject on their own without being pointed in a direction?

Yes. Actually, my favorite sunject in the past has been vacation. But I'm not going on vacation this week :-(

Oh My God!! That's it exactly!!! lol....actually..my brain is just fried enough from conceiving ideas all day at work. I like things being handed to me on a platter....but I will go on and I will make the best of this challenge to use my brain..ugh. Brains...hmmm.......
You do realize that over 50% of brain cells are lost due to motherhood?.. right? That means...2 kids...I'm at -0%, hon. Kids....hmmmmmm (it's been done)

brain cells are overrated anyway : P

I''m actually partly resonsible for this challenge as I suggested it in a thread last week. I think people will find this a lot more difficult than they think. taking a photo on a given subject is one thing. Taking a photo on anything that others will appreciate will definately take time, thought and creativity.
Voting this week (should) be free from comments on Cliche, cats, babies and hopefully more on the technical and artistic aspects.
Have fun & good luck ;-) Lets face it, this is one week out of 52.

When I first saw the topic of this challenge I felt the same way but after sleeping on it a few ideas are starting to percolate through. The only real problem I can see is what are all the people who say my pictures don't meet the challenge going to do?
07/08/2002 12:23:07 PM · #22
Although there is alot of pressure to find one image that will represent your best work,... this challenge isnt to far from the black and white challenge, except now most of us dont have to convert it to grey scale.

Is that a comment or topic suggestion?

I love the idea, but I wish is weren't summer time. I really do not want to wonder around in the 113 degree desert looking for my shot. All of my ideas are outdoors.

Humph, When it comes to straight photography I don't know what I'm good at yet.

What I like best is creative photo editing, you know, with layers? Does free study mean I can go outside of the rules?
