This side challenge is aimed at helping the folks who seem to be stuck in the 4's more often than not. The idea is to shoot something that you can revisit or redo and improve it over the month to where it could be a mid-pack or better shot. If it is a challenge entry that did poorly, even better. By evaluating each others shots, reshooting and reediting, I hope that we can help it "click" with the folks that are unhappy with their challenge performance. We have some "coaches" that can usually pull in the 5-6 range, to provide feedback and suggestions.

"Players", please contact 1 or more "coaches" that you would like help from over the month. I have posted the list of participants with the software they use, as I believe it is easier to help someone when both are working with the same thing. You don't have to work with someone with the same software, but the info is there if it helps.

I think I'm all squared away here, so far as mentors go...

Michelle ( colorcarnival) is helping me out, and I've asked another to run "backup".

8-)

Looking forward to the experience!

I have been bugging Steve and Robert off and on most of the time, and thought it would be a good idea to still keep them as emergency super gurus as needed but give them some breathing room for this thread.

For this side challenge (sub club), I have requested Sarah ( salmiakki) and Paul( paulbtlw) to be my mentors. Hopefully they accept... both Sarah ( salmiakki) and Paul( paulbtlw) have accepted my request to be my mentor.

P.S. Steve: does it make sense to post in the first post how many students a guru is mentoring? That may help new requesters consider not overloading the judges. Just a thought.

I have asked Paulbtlw if he would be my mentor, not sure if he has too many others asking or not yet. Will update when I hear back.

I am hoping for Bear_Music and vawendy, the 2 of you should have some interesting subtle differences of opinion & perception, I should be able to pick up on any hints you can give me. I'd be very grateful. I have CS3, planning to get CS4 soon, & the full Topaz collection. [eta] It won't take much to get me to buy Silver Efex. Coryboehne has already offered me 2 comments, a criticism & a way to deal with it-- & if he has any more cool ideas, I'm ready to try them all out.

Silver Efex is awesome. I only used the trial but man was it great. But too much cash has already been dropped by me so this software is on the backburner for now.

I plunked down for it after the trial expired. There's a good reason it is considered THE software for b/w work. Adorama has it for $145, which is a huge discount.

Joe

who have both kindly accepted. I'm pretty jazzed about getting some advice.

Steve - are we posting any images here or just use our PMs?

Post your edits here, but try to keep most of the discussion of that image in the comments for that image. Others can then easily look to follow it, but it keeps this main thread from getting to cluttered and unfollowable.

Thanks for the tip--maybe this is THE weekend, for I do want to try to get one of those sparkling BW images.

My b/w entries have really taken a bump upward since I got it. To some extent it feels like cheating, but then I suppose one still has to know how to use it effectively, and the lipstick on a pig thing still applies.

ETA: Oops, not the best phrase to use in response, I suppose.

Just want to say thank to Steve for thinking about this wonderful concept of focussed mentoring. I am already in active touch with my gurus and have gotten more input than 25 challenge comments all combined! :-)

WTG Steve!

Couple of things: Can people post their originals here before any of the editing?

2nd, I know you're trying to keep the thread clean, but the reason that DPL was so wonderful, was watching this type of interaction: the discussion of how to make an image better.

I think there's a lot to be learned from this, and I think by doing it all through PMs, there's a lot of information being lost. I may be signed up as a mentor, but I probably could learn a lot by seeing the suggestions that other mentors give on a shot. There must be a better way of working this, so that every can have access to each of the working groups to see what's going on.

You may have misunderstood. I meant to have the bulk of the discussion of the images in the comments dialogs for those images, not in PM's. If the feedback and suggestions are in the comments accompanying the image, then all can read them, and it keeps the main thread a little more streamlined without 20 different discussions criss-crossing in the same thread.

A lot of people have not checked in yet. Either that, or they all want Bear_Music.

None of the mentors appear to be using lightroom. How's that affect things, ye who know more about software than I do?
Anyone want me? :)

Hey Paul, I would really appreciate your guidance and mentoring (as well as patience). Could I be your apprentice?

Cheers,
Phil

I'm only committed to one person so far. I don't have the same software as you, so I won't be able to offer any software specific guidance. Same software is not a requirement, just an idea.

I sent PGerst a PM when I saw he was free, but if you're not over-committed I'd welcome your critique and thoughts too!
