I've managed to figure out a way to make my little HP 733 take the HP 735 firmware (gives additional optical zoom, which I never use, but might have other features embedded elsewhere). Now, all images that the camera writes have HP Photosmart 735 as the creator, the directory names, etc... so everything except the screenprinting on the camera body itself now seems to think that it's a 735, not a 733.

So, what should I list as my camera type in my DPC profile?

Thanks!

Didn't you mean to say that your revised firmware gives additional digital zoom? Too get additional optical zoom would require modifications in the mechanical lens system, something not normally attainable thru firmware revision. It's likely that an increase in digital zoom is the equivalent of cropping a center section of the same image, something you could do with software, and not really that much of a benefit. There may be other improvements in the newer firmware (what does HP claim?) but an increase in digital zoom by itself is probably not worth the risk that you may have installed something that will cause problems/incompatabilities in the future.

Derrrrr. Brainfart. Fingers mistyped what the brain meant. Yes, it's further _digital_ zoom. The HP 735 and 733 are hardware compliant with one another, and it appears that the software is the only difference.

My main question is whether or not I should indicate the true hardware model in my profile (and therefore, my submissions), or the firmware model (which shows in EXIF data).

Depends on whether there are others advantages in the firmware update that you find desirable; and on what the EXIF data shows. And whether or not you can undo the firmware revision. Not all EXIF data is shown by every program that shows it. You may find yourself with a lot of explainging to do if you submit an original image file for verification and it shows two different models of cam, or a model different than what you indicated at the time of submission. If you decide to stick with the update, you might be wise to get a ruling from SC on what camera to call it when submitting entries in advance.

My feeling is that the optics are the most critical aspect. I doubt too many prints are winning that make extensive use of digital zoom. I'd leave your camera exactly as it is, but if you make use of a firmware feature that's not normal for it, make a note in the image comments.

Okay, but my question still stands...

In the case of HP, they made the 733 and 735 cameras _identical_ in hardware with the exception of the text printed on the body, and crippled the software on the 733.

If I'm running the 735 software on a 733, what model should be listed for the camera?

List the 735, that is what your EXIF data will show, and that is what matters for dpchallenge.
