Ok so I recently bought a used Canon 5d (mark 1). Today when I went to manually select which point I would like the camera to focus on it wouldn't let me. I press the upper right button and all the AF points in the viewfinder blink once and thats it! So the button does work I just can't do any selection of the points at all. I just had a 20d so I thought I would be familiar with everything but I hope I am missing something and not that my 5d has an issue :(

What mode is the camera set to?

How is the custom function set in relation to selecting an AF point? Which button is it set for?

Have you been able to select autofocus points before, and now you can't? Or is this the first time you have tried?

In the menu, go to custom functions, and turn on #13(#1-Multi Controller Direct). You can now use the nub above the wheel on the back of your camera to pick specific focus points very quickly.

The ONLY way to have the joystick setup IMHO. I remember when the 5D came out this feature wasnt available and became activated in a subsequent firmware update - so if the option isn't there then you may need to check you have the most up to date firmware installed.

And if you do have old firmware (version 1.0.3 or earlier), before you install new firmware, check the body serial number. If it has a "1" in the fifth position, make sure the camera has been updated by Canon before installing new firmware. There is a hardware change they need to make, otherwise the body is incompatible with 1.0.4 or later.

BTW, you might just try reloading the camera default settings and see if that clears the problem.

This is exactly why I love this forum. So ridiculously knowledgeable. It turned out that it had the multi controller direct method on so you can't select it with either wheels but the joystick worked perfectly.I had downloaded the manual for it but in the autofocus section it never touched base on the custom af selector function. Thank you guys and gals! You rock! Already got a few great shots at the Famous Daves Blues Festival in downtown Minneapolis.
