Announcing: Site Favorites! - DPChallenge Forums

There are a lot of new features and new ideas coming to the site, and this is the first in the line of them. Langdon and I have been discussing the direction we want the site to move in, and high on that list is building a stronger community.

So, I'm glad to announce [url=favorites.asp]Site Favorites[/url]! Users can now select their favorite photographers and favorite photographs. This should be a great way for you to give credit to people and photographs you think deserve more attention.

You can add your favorites through a number of gateways on the site: on a photographer's profile, on an image page, and through your personal [url=favorites_mgr.asp]Favorites Manager[/url].

A big thanks to clubjuggle for suggesting the idea as well as helping us test it. We hope you enjoy the new feature. If you have any suggestions for improvement, be sure to let us know.

Now... start adding your favorites!!

Hey Drew! Glad to see we're live. I love how you implemented the changes to the profile and photo pages. I really appreciate that I've been able to be a part of this from beginning to end as well. Thanks!

One more thing I want to add:

On the Manage Favorites page there is a link to View your statistically favorite photographers. This is probably my favorite part of the whole site favorites section. For a photographer to show up here you must have voted on at least 3 of their photographs. This will show the photographers that you have ranked highest on average. I know that looking through here I found a couple photographers that I consistently liked yet had never really taken notice of. I now know to follow their work, comments and forum posts more closely in the future.

Hey, I'll take an add any way I can get it!

I concur with clubjuggle; this feature has really opened my eyes to a few photographers who I like, but didn't realize it. Also, it's worth noting that the "statistically favorite photographers" takes into account the CURRENT challenge, as my ranking change as a voted this evening.

I'll refrain from making the obvious references to self-love and from quoting former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, and simply say that you shouldn't be able to.

The error message that you get when you try to add yourself used to say something quite similar until I realized my sense of humor may not be well-taken by all site users :)

Gangreen: I checked your photographer favorites list, and you aren't on your own list. The utility will give you an error message if you add yourself.

this is awesome, thanks for putting up the site favorites. now i'm addicted even during those weeks where i haven't submitted a shot! :)

is it possible to expand this just a little further - instead of just voting on favorite photographers and photos, add a list of favorite photos according to final score and favorite photographers according to average (you could always add a minimum number of submissions to this one so it isn't just based on one photo)? kind of similar to the view of my favorite photographers according to votes (which was really eye-opening by the way, thanks!) i think that would be really interesting information, too.

Think this is a great feature and I really like how it is
implemented.

One thing that needs a bit of work is 'interface' to some of
the features. I think maybe putting the 'statistically favourite
photo/photographer' link on to the profile home page would be
helpful, as otherwise it is a bit obscure to find and about the
most interesting feature...

Just wanted join the general praise. This feature rocks! It helps remembering the photo highlights of this site.

Especially useful is the "statistically favorite photographs/photographers" feature. It gives you a good overview of older photos you rated high and the cotrresponding photographers. Quite interesting to see people high up there I didn't recognize so much before but rated their photos very high very often.

Just an update...

There are 1,100+ favorite photographs and 400+ favorite photographers in the database after less than a week of usage. Thanks to all who've helped show off their favorites!
