Can we use Sepia Toning for a challenge with basic editing?

Thanks,

Manuel

Yes, you should be able to get a sepia tone without breaking any of the rules of basic editing.

There are multiple ways to get sepia toning within the basic editing rules. One simple way:
- Convert the image to grayscale
- Convert immediately back to RGB color
- Adjust curves for individual color channels to give the desired effect

The channel mixer is another (more flexible) route.
Some cameras do sepia, but I'd recommend shooting in color and doing the sepia toning with your editing software, you'll have far more control that way.

Hey, PS7 doesn't have a 'sepia' button, is there a better way than using 'variations' to get a sepia effect?

With PS7, the channel mixer provides a very flexible route to sepia. I especially like it because of the control it gives when converting to grayscale.
You also can use the duotone feature. Once you start playing with that, you'll wonder what you did before you knew about it.

I do all my 'sepia' style work by converting to grayscale in the image|mode menu then converting to duotone. From there you can pick duo-, tri-, or quad- tones to get the feel that you want for the individual shot. Save your favorite recipes and it's easy to use the next time...

Me too ... if you are using black as one of the colors, pick a relatively light color for the other ... the one I use most often is Pantone 143 (an orangey-brown color as far as I can tell) with black, and I've also used cyan for a "cold" look.

another very easy sepia technique for PS7 (all versions of PS, i think)...Mode>Greyscale...Mode>RGB...Image>Adjustments>Variations. then, just decide which is the best combo of colors to make the sepia tone you like. you can also lighten and darken the image there, too.
