yep. I'm now a submiting photographer. so far, I've got 5 pics up, and hopefully more are on the way. A lot of my photos have been rejected for noise.

I'm hoping that people will eventually start buying my stuff.

So.
How do you get into istock?
Is there an application process?

Sounds interesting.

Way to go, Quickshutter! And thanks for the link, Eddy. I've been wondering that myself.

That site is contributing to the current raping of photographers incomes...Go to Masterfile if you want to make real money. The average is $1000/ month for every 200 images selected. There are people on there that have 5400 images, do the math.

People, please quit selling yourselves so short and letting people take advantage of you.

Big deal if some one buys your image for $.50. Do you give a chit about the product you get out of a gumball machine? That's exactly what that site is, a gumball machine for photos...

How do we get into Masterfile then? I have a feeling most of us don't have the portfolio to get in. Just a hunch. I'd rather shoot for Corbis, in all honesty...but until I have a gallery of stock to bother about, why bother?

//www.masterfile.com/info/artists/submissions.html Found the link. If anyone tries, let me know. I'm not going to waste my time uploading 10 - 30 images to them to get rejected.

So what I'm hearing is that you truely feel that your images are only worth $.50...

How much are you making on Masterfile?

What he is saying is he is content with what Istock has to offer. To each there own. Thats why we are what we are, a competitive country. I dont agree with Istock, but the chances of me getting into Masterfile are bleak, especially with the type of camera im shooting with. If somone wants to make a few extra bucks out of there hobby then sobeit. If this is cheap photography and doesnt compare to teh higer stuff then you have nothing to worry about correct?

I think it's more a case of: if my shots aren't good enough to get into MasterFile, IStockPhoto is better than nothing.

Sorry, Methos, but I can't afford a 1Ds. Maybe if I turn into JodieCoston and get a few hundred bucks a month from Istock, I can get some better lenses and maybe a 10D with the money I'm making. Not all of us have the library to get into other stock sites. Plus Istockpro pays more than Istockphoto - they are related. One RF, one RM. Doesn't masterfile offer both as well? Do you get paid the same for RF as RM? Istock is simply one non-exclusive way of making $ on images sitting on my hd.

Hang in there :) They will continue. It will add up nicely over time, and even moreso with more images. I have only managed to get 30 images approved at iStockPhoto so far but I have also had 46 downloads. That has translated to $9.50 for me in 21 days from that site.

More images = more money :)

Istock accepted 4 of the 16 I sumbitted. On Dreamstime.com I'm 10/22. My camera has too much noise so I'm limited on what they will take.

I'm just trying to get you guys to see the full marketing potential for your photos. A day rate for a commercial photographer is like $1200 a day PLUS expenses, and your getting excited over $9 in 22 days.

I would like for you guys to set your sights a little higher. An old photographer friend of mine was once bitching about people calling him to shoot something just because they assumed he was cheap. Not because they liked his style or creativity, but just because they thought he would do it cheap.

You can pigeon whole yourself pretty quick in the beginning, just be careful what is associated with your name...

And if I were a great photographer wanting to do photography for a living maybe I would do that. Since I am a average photographer with a crappy camera and photography is just for fun, anything I get out of it is bonus and Istockphoto is perfect for me.

So what do you do for a living?

This is my story too. I don't look towards photography as a means of supporting myself. My only interest in making money from photography is to pay for some of my equipment and finance an occasional vacation.

How is my occupation relevant to a discussion about Istockphoto?

It is very relevent, I'll give a good example of how it's relevent after you answer the question to illustrate my point.

If that's true John, then I really suck.
I did however make make .30 today. I upload each of the only two images that I have managed to get approved. Add that to the .50 I made off of Dreamstime, and I'm damn near professional. :)

Well, I take pictures for fun not profit so there is no comparison between photography and what I do for a living. I also hike, backpack, climb mountains and kayak for fun. I could chose to become a guide, but insurance, equipment, hassles of running a business and having to deal with customers isn't worth the money I'd make and it probably wouldn't be as fun anymore. Just as buying a fancy camera and taking, processing, and uploading 30 pictures just for the chance that I may make some money isn't worth the the bother for me.

Istock and dreamstime are simple, quick and easy. If I make some money, WOOHOO! If I don't no big loss. If it turned out I was a great photographer and I started moving pictures on Istock, I'd consider shutting it down (which I can do at any time) and moving my images to a more profitable location.

Now, if it's relevant... I happen to have a job that I enjoy very much and get paid very well to do. If I didn't enjoy my job, yes I would accept less money to do something more enjoyable.

PS in the last few hours I doubled the money I have made as a photographer!!! Maybe I am pretty good!

PSS Istock has Istock pro which only allows higher quality and better images where you could make some good cash.

Nobody sucks... It's just about where everyone's individual interests are. Mine are not in professional photography. Through my print sales and the recent addition of royalty free stock, I hope to break even and not much more. With everything I have at this very moment, I'm only about $1000 shy of the break even point.
