What is your opinion on giving your beloved photos as gifts? I am in the process of have a couple of mine framed as gifts and I wonder if anybody has ever regreted doing it or do you do it regularly?

I've done this a few times for friends and family.

The only time I've regretted it is when I didn't mat the picture before
giving it to them and then later saw it stuck in a frame 'bare'.

Now I usually just custom mat it before giving it to someone and then let
them get a frame for it themselves, unless it is a 'real' present.

I don't know why else you'd regret doing it, unless you didn't like the picture ?

I've mostly given small photos to family/friends, but I'm planning to give away more large ones. I went to my local thrift store and bought a bunch of "used" frames for $1-3 each; I even got one as large as 18x22".

It's like giving any piece of art I guess, appreciation of the art is very subjective. I don't want anybody to feel they have to display it if they don't like it. I am very happy though that I am having them matted and framed. :)

My husband and I gave two as a 25th wedding anniversary gift. To ensure that the couple would like them, we asked them to look through my portfolio and pick them. Now I hear that the wife wants to redecorate the room in which one of them will be hung - to give it the "proper environment!!"

I give matted and framed photographs as fairly major gifts. I usually add the recipient's name to the title on the image (i.e. "Bands of Gold, for Tammy")to make them unique. On these occasions, I have a pro frame them so they aren't cheap. This year, I will be giving five as Christmas gifts.

My previous gifts seem to be appreciated, so I hope these will be too.

For me the issue is whether or not the recipient will actually like my photos. I'm usually much more excited about my photos then anyone else is. So I only give away a photo if I am certain that the person will enjoy it enough to display it. This year I sent my dad and step-mom a beautiful wall clock that holds twelve small photos around it. I printed the twelve photos of our family and pets. Since it was a family theme I knew they would love it but any other kinds of photos I am much more careful about. A gorgeous waterfall to me might just be a bunch of water falling to someone else.

I GOT ONE I GOT ONE!

McMurma sent me his pear and gourd pic which I love - I got it yesterday!!

I need to send him one of mine back (haven't got a printer yet so need to get it high res scanned and printed commercially) - as he's actually daft enough to like one of my (non DPC) pics enough for printing.

But it was a coooool gift for him to send me!

Actually I have done pics for my parents for presents - but photos of me my sis and Pete, not works of art!

I just blew up one of my own pics for the first time, to 11x14 inches, had it mounted and framed professionally. I am sooo delighted with it...

We cropped "Blue Lady" to a portrait, made several color prints, and are now in the process of finding this grandmother to give them to her. She sells flowers at the Ajijic village street market but we have not located her yet. We hope she will like the photos, perhaps to give to her children and grandchildren.

I too have given my photos as gifts; as a matter of fact I recently mailed out calendars that I created with my photos to my family abroad. The recipients of my photos have displayed them in a variety of places such as work and in the home offices. It has actually drummed up some business for me. Some of their fellow co-workers have enjoyed the prints and have asked to purchase the same print or others similar to them. I try not to find out where my prints will end up displayed, that way it doesn't cause me any heartache if I see one hanging in a restroom somewhere.

It may as well be someplace where people can enjoy it in quiet contemplation as in some busy hallway...
