Hi please help

I used 2 studio lights for the first time today but got black strip on photos??? Why?

Subject and 2 lights was forming a triangle (45 degrees). Lights at about equal power. Lights about 1 m from subject. settings on camera f11, iso 200, 1/250 speed.

Please also recommend good books where I can learn more...

Kind regards
Marna

Possibly: Shutter speed is too fast. The shutter is already starting to close before all the light has got in.

Tx - I will try at slower speed...

I agree--try 1/200 next time (or steadily increase up from 1/160 and watch when the band just starts, then gets wider. Your manual should tell you the fastest synch speed for your camera. I have two nikons, and they are both 1/200th

Yup.....shutter speed is too fast. I learned this the hard way too.

D700's aren't synced at 1/250th? I thought most high end cameras were. hmm

What are you using to trigger the flashes? Is it some cheap chinese triggers? It may be the battery in these cheap triggers and not your sync speed.. My camera is synced at 1/250th and sometimes I get the same result but it's because I use the chinese triggers, not my shutter speed. I replaced the batteries and all is ok, for now.

What are you using to trigger the flashes? . . .

Agreed/confirmed -- D700 (non-FP) sync speed is 1/250. It appears your flash triggers are, somewhat significantly, misaligned from your actual curtain timing. What are you using to fire your strobes? Have you tried both front and rear curtain sync -- if so, how did the results differ?

Hi

Currently I am using a sync cable direct from camera to light and second light trigger with light.

I have a Skyport trigger, which is standard with the Elinchrom 500Brxi lights I bought but still struggles to get it working.

Thanks for all the advice.

Do you have access to a speedlight to verify that it is this lighting setup only that generates banding with sync?
I ask because some of the 5dMkII\'s real world sync speeds are slower than the stated value. I haven\'t heard of that being true with the D700, but it\'s possible. Does it do the same thing with a hotshoe mounted speedlight?
I\'d also try firing only the one light and see if you get any banding so that you can determine where in the chain things are slowing down.
It seems very strange for you to get banding when using a cord, to be honest.

Thanks - lower shutter speed worked.

Agreed. I think in return for everyone's effort to resolve the problem- they deserve a taste of what it looks like with proper lighting. LOL. Post some work up for us.
