Here's a thought:

Might we consider an option for paid members of the site to turn off watermarking when browsing portfolios? I'm inclined to think that image-snagging from paid members is a minimal risk, and personally, a watermark kills any image for me and really detracts from the experience of browsing the site.

Anyone care to discuss?

It doesn't bother me, though I can see how the watermarks could be a distracting eye magnet for some folks.

I agree with you, I hate to see watermarks on many photos, especially when they're right in the middle. They really ruin the photos.

I agree, an option for paid members is a very good idea.

Here is a different opinion, they aren't your photos that are being watermarked. they are being watermarked because the owner of the photo wants them watermarked. Why not respect his/her wishes? They had it done for a reason.

Matt: you've laid out what has to be the strongest counterargument for my idea. One middle-ground solution might be to allow users who do watermark their photos to allow deactivation of the watermarks for the users who are paid members.

If the reason for watermarking was the fear of theft, the reason may be moot when it comes to paid members. It seems very unlikely that paid members were ever among those responsible for snagging images from DPC and reposting them elsewhere.

I would think that members who watermark to avoid theft would have their wishes disrespected by stealing their intellectual property, but not so much by removal of the watermark for paid members. Watermarks would remain visible for registered members and anyone not logged in.

If it were a preference of the photographer to allow the watermark to be turned off by a paid member then I wouldn't have a problem with this. This could be taken a step further by having a link to the unwatermarked image, just like we have for larger images. So the initial view would be of the watermarked image and if the photog has allowed viewing of the unwatermarked image then a link would be present to access that version.

And I really respect your opinion. My opinion on watermarks is that artists watermarking their images here should mark them during voting also.

I HATE HATE HATE the watermarks. But I respect the rights of those who want to use them. But I will probably never fav a watermarked image.

I agree I don't like the watermarks but so far it really hasn't impacted my viewing experience yet *knock on wood*. That's porobably because outside of the challenges I only look at the artistic photographs and those rarely have the watermarks. It's the staged stock photography and consumer related stuff (ex. senior portraits, etc) that typically have the watermark.

I would probably have been much happier and wealthier today had I only watermarked my images. Darn it! Why do I never learn! :p

I don't like the watermarks, I don't watermark. Your photo is your business.

Seems like there's no disagreement that it would be harmless to allow a photographer to disable his or her watermarks for logged-in, paid members.

Speaking of watermarks during voting... would a generic DPC watermark that takes the place of xxxxxx.dpchallenge.com be appropriate for those who want "extra protection" during the voting phase? Something like "Property of a DPC user. Do not steal." in a really small font (like on two lines that together are a thickness of the current font) would work.
