Has anyone had any experience renting the occasional piece of equipment? I am traveling in October and have been thinking about renting some equipment that I don't have now but would greatly improve my shots taken at the event I'm going to. My husband and I will be there for a week site seeing and attending a balloon festival. That balloons are what I want to get awesome pictures of .

Any suggestions?

I have used www.borrowlenses.com and www.lensrentals.com both with excellent service and results.

When I was investigating which lens to buy, I just rented them and tried them out. I live in Los Angeles, so there's plenty of places to rent from.

You didn't mention where you were going, but you can either rent there or at home if you find a place. There are usually day rates and weekly rates.

We are going to the Albuquerque Balloon Festival in October. Renting there might be easier but they might be out of lenses to rent too. We will be gone over a week and I hope to see a bit more of New Mexico other than just the balloons. I've seen the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I also have a family friend that lives in Questa, NM and hope to visit them. I haven't ever seen the Taos area so I"m pretty excited about that.

What lenses do you have?

She's married to Yo_Spiff and he has a Canon 50D. I'd rent the Canon 10-22mm.

I recommend the 70-200 f/2.8L IS or f/4L IS....

But he has a 10-24mm lens.

I'd say the Canon 100-400L and a 1.4x converter.

I definitely second this.. go for the 2.8 IS II and a 2x teleconverter.

ETA: But only if you're ready to lay out $2500 sometime really soon... (cause you're gonna want one.. ) :)

So if we let you use it then You'll have to meet up with us to take pictures. That the plan?

Sounds great. Have you gone to the balloon festival? Have looked at the site and can't figure out the best way to manage our attendance at this event. Funniest part is to get watch my always sleeping late, NOT morning person, husband get up early to get there before dawn. Well, maybe it won't be too bad, he gets up that early for work everyday.

Paying attention to our wallets, What would you guys take with you to shoot hot air balloons?

That 50 1.8 of Steve's should be a really good choice..

Essentially I recommend the 70-200 2.8 IS II because of the "speed" of the lens, that big aperture will be a blessing in the low-light that will be your limiting factor in the morning.

Of course, Steve has some really good glass, so I don't think I'd worry over much about it. Essentially any fast "L" lens will do very nicely.

One of the biggest things I can say about Balloon Fiesta is that some of the best shots are taken anywhere but Balloon Fiesta Park... I suggest trying to shoot across the Bosque (wooded river bottom), so a longer zoom would be nice, hence the recommendation of a 2x tele and the f 2.8 lens (they combine to still be a very usable f/5.6 400mm)..

In any case, that's just what I would do.. Did you have a look at the cost for rental? I've got this one memorized,, 7 days with insurance for $107, the Regular IS is $80 and the non-is is $61.. the 2x tele will add on another $27..

So what's your budget? Clearly, another one to consider is the monster 400 2.8 IS, but that's an 11lb lens and it'll cost you $285 for that 7 days... But remember with that 2x converter, you'll be able to have a 800mm f/5.6 IS... Not bad, not bad at all.

Don't really know what our budget is but will be tight. I know that I want to go to Santa Fe to see the Lorretto Chapel, Old Town, Sandia Peak and meander up the Turquoise Trail. Along with ample time with the balloons.

What I was interested in was seeing what you guys would, if budget mattered or if it didn't.
