I think I should have entered one of these two instead of the one I did... I went for something more unusual and it's already not doing well. I was afraid that might happen because it could be argued that the train isn't really the subject. My husband encouraged me to enter the one I did. I think one of these would have done better. Ah well. Ann

Well, I did something that I thought would be unusual, and no one else has one of these in their shots, but I started at a 5 and now with 8 votes am at a 4.2. I don't know what's so terrible about the shot. I may give up after Choices. Gosh, I have been on quite a roll the last four challenges...each one besting the last for my worst scores!!! Oh well, I won't be upset for long.

I really like the second photo, Ann. Love that red. It really sets off the picture, I think. :o)

I've been thinking "outside the box" lately, maybe that's why I'm in a slump. I think I'll jump back in the box for a while untill I get out of this slump.

I think I'm setting a new low-scoring record... yay.

Hey, I feel the same too....giveing that this challenge gave me something that I never have shot before, a train....I was totally unprepared that day and only had a day to shoot this week for this challenge. I didn't have time to study timeing and locate a nice background to go along with my shot.....However, it was fun and it was a challenge....Moreover, I think that I wanting to go back out there and capture a much better shot and take more time. Also, to use other camera settings after I'm kicking my butt...."ahh man, I couldn't have done that or this".... not I know and it's all about learning on this one for me....a few shot I can tell you will be the top ranking 10...Good luck folks and happy shooting.

Don't get so wrapped in your scores folks! Don't compromise yourself just so you can get a good score on DPC. The reason this sight was created was simply to challenge and motivate you to take more and better pictures, not to make you conform to one type of picture that will get you a good score. Take pictures of what you want, abstract or linear, in or out of the box, enter the pictures that you are proud of. That way, you'll improve, and you'll have work that you really like, not work that you only like cause you got a good score!

without this site and the challenges I would never in my wildest dreams have ever thought about going out and taking a photo of a train, multiple light sources, opposites or a banana (1st for me - a banana as a model *lol*)even though I'm not scoring well I'll continue to enter cos though it's easier to take photos of familiar subjects and get the wow's and well done's........I learn more from the challenges

didn't want to start a new thread just for that, but in this challenge (PT&A) I think it's one of the first time that noe one was able to put in a insect macro :)

Is this a first?

Not only are there no bug macros, there are no toliets! I guess no one was taking a train trip when this started!

I could have written that word for word. I started out with a 5.8 and right now I'm at a 4.1.

I am also contemplating giving up submitting photos and letting my membership run out. I'm thankful I opted to try a month first, rather than purchase a whole year.

As disheartening as it may seem, don't give up now...I'm not! I am just as discouraged, but my score (which has crept up to a whopping 4.6 now) is irrelevant...I shot something I like, it's different, unique, and I had to go out of my way and take it instead of settling for "whatever met the challenge" so I am personally fulfilled with it (maybe just full of it!).

[/laurie steps up on soapbox]Please don't give up your membership...this is a fun place and we're all here to learn. Most of us will never be able to compete with those who are pros, semi-pros, or live in or near picturesque, scenic vistas that are chock full of ribbon-winning potential. We just get along, hoping for the best, and preparing for the inevitable. Sometimes luck comes along in a stroke of inspiration (like my ribbon-winner), but I know I'm not doing this for a living. A lot of people here do take pictures as their bread-and-butter, so they naturally SHOULD be damn good at it. I just like having fun, challenging myself, and occasionally whining about the sad state of my score (a little pity party never hurt anyone). Stick around...the plot always thickens! ;O) [laurie steps down]

...whew....can we all hug now?

I'm struggling with myself, trying to break out of my own natural urge to do what is familiar and comfortable. DPC is a great place to get ideas and feedback. I haven't entered any challenges yet, but my photography as a whole is improving just by being around people like me.

As was said earlier, don't pay so much attention to scores. I just joined but have seen a WIDE range of skill levels. Comparing my 20 month old daughter's scribbles to a Monet wouldn't be fair but that's basically how things work here. Everyone is in the same category. Whether people realize it or not, while they're scoring, they're comparing photos to ones they've just seen. Having been a judge in numerous digital art shows, I can tell you it's very difficult to judge an image solely on it's merit and takes some practice. Rather than looking at numbers, look at the comments, this is where you'll get your most helpful input.
Keep submitting and thinking out of the box. If you're not unique, you're just like everyone else and where's the fun in that?!

I don't submit very often. I have paid for two years of membership now, strictly because i love the site, the people I meet on it, and the things i learn here. I could do that for free I guess as a registered user, but the lack of advertising tells me that these guys run the site on membership fees, so I'm compelled to support them.

who gives a crap if your scores suck and no one understands you? It's the cheapest education I've ever encountered.

I like the first picture, more unusual point of view... the second is prefect but too litterate for me... For the score... sometime i cannot understand the voting pattern, a picture having 20 x 10 can have 10 x 1.... how possible.....

For the comment i try to read as mush as i can, and see other people work, redoing poeple good work is the most flattering form of compliment. It say, hey your work is great, i will do the same...

Just my idea on why i am here !
