I really, really want it. I gotta have it.

So I have been hunting for a reasonable solution and have settled in the JOBO GPS001 Photo GPS Geo Tagging Flash Shoe as seen here at Adorama and here at B&H.

I am ready to order, but...

Is anyone using this and how is it working for you? Any feedback or other suggestions that work really well for you?

And, no, I will not be switching to Nikon :) Will be using it on Canons G9, G10, XTi,and 50D.

Putting this out here and heading off to work. Thanks guys.

I can see a use for this... I sometimes go for drives, taking pictures along the way. A couple of times I came up with things that I wanted to revisit, but couldn't remember exacty where it was. If you spent the day wandering looking for shots, it might be a lot of ground to re-cover.

However, it probably also means keeping duplicate files. I would guess that adding the geo-tags when you pull the files off the camera, would violate the challenge rules for original files. (Right SC?)

I have a Garmin Oregon that I have synched my time on my 20d to. Once I start to take photo's that I will geo tag later, I clip the Oregon onto my back pack, start the Oregon (active track), and take photo's.
Once home I use Garmin Base Camp (software supplied with the Oregon) to Geo Tag the photo's. (Edit, Geotag photo's)

Very easy.
You can then upload to Google earth / Panaramio etc.

I don't know if it can be useful, but I'm thinking of buying a PhotoTrackr Mini DPL900.
(Sorry, I can't post the link, since I'm a new user)

I've never tried it before, but I've heard some good reviews.

You mean this one?

Photo Tracker DPL900

They seem to love it or hate it over at Amazon... (Which is where the link goes.) I have no experience with it either.

I usually remember where I have been when out taking photos, so it isn't too hard to retrace my steps another day. I'm going out tomorrow with my new Sigma 10-20mm, now, where did I leave it?? :)

Hi guys,

I am co-owner of a GPS tracking company here in Canada.

Can anybody tell me what voltage the hotshoe on a camera runs at when taking a picture? Is the hotshoe powered all the time, with just a burst of voltage during shutter actuation? Do all models of DSLR cameras (Canon, Nikon et al) have the same hotshoe size and specs?

sorry if these are noob questions. I have only been into photography for a few months, but GPS locating for 5 years now.

I have an idea that might be a perfect solution....

The hotshoe is different for each brand of camera, hence the need for like branded or third party flash made for a specific brand.

Ok, that doesnt really complicate things....

Anyone have an idea how to get the specs (voltage, current, measurements etc.) w/o taking each camera to engineering? ;)

The main contacts on hot shoes are simply a contact closure. The flash supplies the voltage, not the camera. (Much like pressing the test button on the flash.) Some third party flashes cannot be used with hot shoe adapters because their voltage/current is so high they fry the contacts in the camera. The large center contact and the shoe frame are shorted together when the camera fires to complete the circuit from the flash. The additional contacts are for camera communication to the flash. Each manufacturer has their own proprietary setup on those.

Unfortunately it needs a USB port.

That also needs a USB port. Looking to carry less and not a laptop either LOL

This item, Sony GPS-CS3KA, does not take CF cards.

What is the simplest way to do this that actually works? That is what I am looking for. If there is a reliable device that will add the info onto a CF card, then I am there!

ATP Photo Finder takes them, but the reviews are not good.

ATP at Amazon), it just arrived on April 26.

The Mini version may be useful,Photo Finder Mini

I believe it appends a KML file, not changing the original.

I just pull out my Droid and snap a similar picture with it. Then when I get home can transfer the GPS data to my photos.

I had the same thought - to get a P&S with GPS like the Lumix DMC-ZS7 or Sony DSC-HX5V, but I don't really want to carry yet another camera. It is a thought though :)

I already carry my phone everywhere so it is not a big deal really. Just a little extra time to snap a photo. If I am going to be in the same general area for awhile I just take one pic to cover them all. Unless I am out in the woods and would like to find that exact spot again.

I also have several GPS units I use for hunting and fishing that could use but that would require something else in my bag. So I just use the phone. Now if Canon came out with a vertical grip for the 7D that did GPS I would buy it in a second.

I currently use my Garmin eTrex Legend H as we're often geocaching anyway at the same time... I can mark any location I want to revisit quite easily on there.

I got the JOBO from Adorama today and have been playing around with it. It works as advertised, but I would prefer just the coordinates be displayed in EXIF instead of street address and see no way of editing that. The website is in German only, which I understand, but I am more comfortable in English :)

sample at Flickr

I do like it though, but also have the Lumix DMC-ZS7 camera coming next week :)

added: found the English site
