I have my first "show" starting May 1st! The Starbucks in our neighborhood will be featuring my photos on one of their walls all of May.

I am trying to decide what to hang, and what to "hand out" (comp cards or whatever). My goal is to generate print sales, and hopefully get a call from other local venues that may want to show prints or hang them.

The number that I can hang depends on the size, of course. But I think I have "5 columns" of space (maybe 6). Most of my shots though would take up one column. I was thinking I should stick with one media and try to favor scenes that "locals" would recognize.

My first guess would be to pick the following:

...........................................................................................................................................................

All of these other than the twin bridges scene is canvas. Twin bridges is a very nice standout mounted lustre print (no glass). It's not one of my favorites artistically, but it's a big local landmark, and I think it would capture "local interest". The canvas prints in general stand out in their beauty, because they are so painterly and without glass. However, the standout prints also look quite gorgeous. The only other big standout I have is "Three seconds in Fall" (see below), which is incredibly gorgeous, and I like it even more (but it doesn't have the local landmark value of the bridges).

And of course, note that I squeezed in a 6th column, when I am guestimating I will only have wallspace for 5 columns (but that's just a guess)

Questions...

A) Stick with one theme? (e.g., all Landscapes, no abstracts)
B) Mix media, i.e., canvas and standouts, or all canvas? (And see E below for "regular framed prints)
C) Local scenes /recognition higher priority? I was thinking so, but that forces me to mix media and possibly leave out my favorites.
D) I'd love to hear your "best picks" (probably the limit for Canvas) you would hang (you can use numbers or names or just include the thumbs you choose). My choice list, from my canvas and standout prints I already have done is:

1. , "Sailor's Delight" (Castle Hill Light), Rhode Island, 16x24 Canvas
2. , "Spectral Crossing", Mohawk River, Niskayuna NY (Local), 16x24 Canvas
3. , "Dawn Inspiration", Letchworth State Park, NY, 16x24 canvas
4. , "Water Colors", Mohawk River, Niskayuna NY (Local), 16x24 Canvas
5. , "Geometry in Steel", Twin Bridges, Latham NY (Local), 16x20 Standout Mounted Print
6. , "Shower of Eden", George Childs State Park, Poconos, PA, 18x18 Canvas
7. , "Flow", abstract tulip, 16x20 Canvas
8. , "Whirlwind Passion", abstract, 16x20 Canvas
9. , "Three Seconds in Fall", Catskills, NY 16x24 Standout Mounted Print
10. , "Manhattan Lights", New York, NY 16x24 Canvas
11. (see thumb on DPCPrints, more 'accurate' than the one on DPC) "Rain over the Mohawk", Mohawk River (Local) 12 x 24 canvas
12. , "Bass Harbor Light", near Acadia, Maine 16x24 Canvas
13. , "swirlpool", Treeman state park, Ithaca, 16x24 canvas
14. , "autumn spring", Kaaterskill Falls, NY, 16x20 canvas (also have this as a nicely framed print)

E) Mix in regular framed prints? e.g., I could put in the well received "Acadia Rocks" and "Portal to the Heavens" shots, or some of my favorite BW shots I already have framed:

Sorry for the long post, but thanks in advance for your feedback!

Congratulations Neil.

Keeping to local subjects I think is a good idea. People will connect with them better.

If you're going to mix themes, hang them so they're balanced, like putting all of one type in the middle and one of another type on each end.

Also, if I were choosing I'd balance the colour schemes as well, just for display cohesion.

Since you are limited to a small number to hang, I'd stick with one type of media. If choosing more than one media then balance is the key (to me anyway).

Just some random thoughts.

Huge congrats, Neil! Well deserved!! And a suggestion - if you have all of May to display your work, rotate it! Put up five (or six) for a week, then change out a couple, then change out a couple more. The folks that go to Starbucks tend to go frequently - many go every day. They will notice when you change the prints. And that way you can display all of what you want to display!

Huge Congrats to you Neil!! Very exciting!!

I really like flow and swirlpool too - I think possibly rotating them out would be a good idea if you can do it. Best of luck to you and I hope you get lots of sales.

Awesome!! I've had my stuff in a local Starbucks on and off. It's fun to go in and watch people react to your work without them knowing who you are!

congratulations Neil!!

I think you should stick to one theme, and make as consistent a presentation as possible - that shows professionalism (this is the advice I have hard time following myself, lol). Then I would not rotate your images "little by little", I think it is a waste of effort. People will not notice small changes, except for the ones who may be interested in buying one of your photos, and since it my take more than one Starbucks coffee to reach this decision, they would be annoyed that their "favorite" photo disappeared. I would only replace the photo after it is purchased. To me it makes much more sense to change the whole show at once, that really gets noticed.

I'm always impressed as I look through your portfolio to see the way you've captured the local spots, so I like the idea of the local theme. I'll try to stop in to see what you've picked in person! Good luck!

Congratulations, Neil! I would echo the local theme idea - other than that, I don't think you have anything that wouldn't look awesome on a wall. Best of luck with the results!

Congratulations Neil! I look forward to hearing how this showing goes for you when it's over.

I agree that the best choices to make are to keep it mostly local, mostly one theme, and keep it mostly one medium. However, I have found that canvas prints don't sell nearly as well as matted prints, even if the final cost for print and framing for the print meet or exceed the ready to hang canvas price. For this reason, I think that if you don't display work that exemplifies other media options then you should have a price card attached that indicates the price for that piece and the prices for other options.

I make my price cards with a thumbnail of the image, the title, the price of the print that is hanging, and in smaller font I list the other available options. I print these as 4 by 6" photos and attach them to the botom right corner of the print that is hanging.

Good luck!
