Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-f/6.3 VC LD Aspherical Lens $549.00

Tamron is a well known 2nd choice brand, ( others will disagree with me there ) My biggest concern would be the massive difference in focal length. This in a cheaper lens means that it cannt be sharp through the range & with a 6.3 being wide open at the long end it is really slow. If quality is a concern, you would be far better going for 2 perhaps even 3 lenses to cover that range. However that being said not everyone has a huge budget, so perhaps it will suit, but its worth remembering that that lens would be worthless second hand.

I have the predecessor to that, A Tamron 28-300, non stabilized. It's a decent lens for what I paid for it, though it is indeed sometimes slow to focus and the pics at the long end can be iffy. I understand the 18-270 is much better, and I have considered it myself. If you don't like lugging extra lenses around I think it's a good choice.

And there's currently a $100 rebate offer if you buy the lens by May 10.

Since my earlier response in this thread, I have gotten a Tamron 10-24. Wow! Best lens in my bag now. I am in love with this lens. I don't know why there are so few owners of it on this site, other than it being a relatively new model.
