Here I was, sitting in hot (over 100 degrees yesterday) Alamogordo, feeling all depressed about all the neat cicada shots coming from the east coast. I went out walking Saturday only to hear what I thought were cicadas. Occasionally I would see something like a large fly buzzing about. They would land on a waving ocatillo, only to fly away if I got too close.
Finally, by approaching very slowly, I got my camera close enough to get a shot with the macro setting. I was sure it wouldn't work because the breeze was causing the branch to sway alot, but I got lucky.
I'm pretty sure this is a cicada, but I thought they were only on the east coast. Must be a different species. And, boy, are they loud.
