Buying lenses is so confusing and when you can't afford too many of these, it makes a hard choice even harder. So far I’m considering either the

10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM
Or the
12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASP HSM

So far I own an xti, a 20d and a 30d but I'll eventually end up with a 5d soon and that's where it gets a bit confusing. I'll still keep the 30d and the 10-20mm's wide aperture is an attractive feature, shooting dim lit concerts that wide seems just amazing but with the 5D's full frame with the 12mm sounds like an even better deal. Also, I have no idea how the 10-20mm would look like on a 5d.

There’s also the 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM that could be an option? I’m open to any suggestions... I’m really not sure what to get.

I personally would always go with the faster glass.
F3.5 throughout the range would be more valuable to me than one that only does f5.6 at the long end of the zoom.

I use the 10-20 on my 40D and it works pretty well. On a 5D it should work just as well. 10mm is wiiiiide on a FF camera

I use a 5D and would love to try a true 12-24mm lens. Just in general, it would be really fun to play with. I wouldn't worry too much about the speed. You can always compensate with raising iso levels. Plus the 12-24 will mount on all your cams.
Really consider the 12-24. I have seen great reviews. It may not be as wide on your 20d now, but when you get the 5D, WOW! Yeah, it should be crazy wide at true 12mm. I'm still trying to find one in Ottawa to mount up. I'm curious too. Hey, why don't you go to a store and try a 5d or markII with the 12-24. Go see what you might miss. That extra 4mm will be a huge difference. Yeah, at least then you won't be second guessing yourself.

I think the 10-20 is designed for a crop camera. I'm pretty sure it would mount, but it would probably also hit the mirror at 10MM end and damage the camera.

I also think MattO is correct. The "DC" code on Sigma lenses are designed for crop sensors.
Sigma linky

ETA: Additional link for that lens.

On the Sigma..

Consistently soft, even after micro adjustments. (then again.. It's really not THAT soft, it's just a 12mm lens).
Very fun.
Well, and I do mean well, built.
Fun lens, but I would probably just try for a wide prime as I almost NEVER touch the thing, it's always @ 12mm. (probably would be sharper @14-15..)

In any case, I do like the Sigma quite a bit, and I can say that I really like the effect of a wide angle photo with perfectly straight straight lines... Very cool lens indeed.

Here's my only entry taken with it.. My personal best FWIW.

Well, ok, here's an entry of it... My personal 2nd best :) Seems I might want to use this lens more often.. hmmm.

ETA: If you're using this lens, you'll want to learn to get CLOSE, and I do mean CLOSE to your subjects.. Oh, and it's pure sh*t for photographing people, it does horrible things to their faces (this lens distorts circles and preserves straight lines...)

I just read that the 12-24mm doesn't take normal filters but rather "Rear Gelatine Filters", which again, I have no knowledge about. I'm guessing mounting a circular polarizer genaltine filter would be impossible, right?

I have the 10-20 on my 40D and I love it.

I have a 5D and the 12-24. My copy is sharper than my Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 (the older one).

You will have a HFOV of 111 degrees, so you will get edge distortion (people at the left and right edges look fatter than people in the middle.)

See //www.16-9.net/lens_tests/14mm/14mm_test.html

If you're concerned about dim light, look into the 16-35L.

BTW, Sigma has announced an 8mm-16mm for crop sensors.

I thought maybe finally I had found a wide angle zoom but nooooo. No 4/3 mount. They make a stinking Sony* mount but not an Oly one. ???

* Not that Sony make bad cameras.

I went with the Sigma 10-20 3.5, very satisfied with it so far. I'll be shooting something for this current challenge, we'll see how she does.

Thanks for the input; this community kicks ass.
