My runner-up shot for the Waiting challenge. Hopefully the other one will fare better, but I thought this was worth sharing. Whattya' think?

Uh, oh. I see my photo comment struck a nerve, Rooster. ;-)

I like it to. Would fit the challenge great, and well done with the perfectly round web, spider that's right in the middle, nice dark background and shallow focus.

Oops! Wrong choice apparently. Though my friends and co-workers unanimously picked the shot I entered, it's at 5.70 (after starting at 8). I think the spider was more "artsy" and, no, none of the spider shots entered are mine.

Very well done. I added this one to my favourites.

So much for my friends and co-workers. I guess "ask the audience" only works on TV.

While ribbons would be nice, my personal goal when entering any challenge is to top my overall average score (which would presumably mean I'm improving). The shot I entered instead of the spider is sitting at 5.7429- EXACTLY the same as my profile average. Nothing gained, nothing lost.

I guess this thread is the "phone a friend" (several times) choice.

Yeah, except I can't ask you guys before I enter. Sometimes the hardest part is making a choice. So what's the next Open Challenge? ;-)

An error in judgement.

I think it's a cool shot but the idea of waiting doesn't immediately come to mind without the hint from the title. I probably would have knocked a score off for that although I do try to be flexible about the challenge guidelines. What it comes down to with the more abstract ideas is, "do I get a gut reaction from this in terms of the challenge?" I can imagine the spider waiting patiently in its web for prey, I guess, so I might have let it go. I usually review my votes after I've done them all and frequently I will (grudgingly) accept a few of the interpretations I initially rejected.

Anway, I would have been sure to let you know I liked the shot.

Great shot - really looking forward to see your real entry !

Melissa- exactly my rationale for passing up the spider shot. If the spider had been facing me, I might get the 'waiting' aspect quicker (in the shot I entered, there's simply no doubt). I liked the angled web and DOF in this one, though I would have preferred just a tad more detail... the shot was handheld with the 50mm f/1.8 at dusk, and a breeze was blowing the web around. Tough conditions.
