I got asked to do some photos for an engagement announcement recently. I accepted the opportunity and came up with These Photos. I didn't think to tell them what to wear and my friend showed up in a red sweater... lol..

The color images aren't so hot but the objective was to get a 5x7 black and white to run in their local newspaper where they are getting married...

comments appreciated...

I like the ones where she is sitting on his knee, they look more relaxed on those.

I like the idea on those but I didn't like the uneven facial lighting that i got because of the direction of the sun... i used the fill flash and still couldn't even those up nicely...

The very last photo (Erin4347-m4-s.jpg) is the best for me. The pose makes them look 'close' and it loses the harshness of the straight B&W version.

I prefer the knee-sitting shot too. But the light flash across her chest is distracting

John, the three I like the best are-

4347-m2: I love the "pose" here, and this one is actually my favorite, and certainly has the "engagement announcement" look, but I find the white pants a little distracting.

4340-m2: I like this one very much too. It has the "engagement announcement" look, and I really like the way they are posed by the fence which blocks out the white pants - if I was choosing for the paper, I'd choose this one.

4343-m2: I like this shot, but it doesn't have the same "feel" for me that the other two do.

They are all terrific shots, but boy does that red sweater stand out in the color ones!!

John,
As usual these are great photos. I did find one thing a bit distracting however; in every photo where you can see her engagement ring it looks like it is not lined up correctly on her finger. Since this is a wedding announcement I'm sure a lot of people will be drawn to here engagement ring so it should be straight. Or maybe I'm just not seeing it right. Anyway good work,
Roger

this one or this one

these two look the most natural. i think i'd go with the 4347 personally.

the sepia without the soft focus works best for me. you have to consider that the newsprint will degrade the image and it may just end up looking poorly focused if the soft one is used. then again, if the reproduction is typically good for that paper then maybe go with the soft. they look very professional.

I think (Erin4347-m4-s.jpg) is the best as I can see it without knowing the people. The background is calm, the lighting is good. If you want it in colour try to do it like (Erin4344-m1-s.jpg) because in that photo the colours are warm and makes the right atmosphere. I donĀ“t like the first ones with a big tree in the background, it seems to grow up from their heads. Of course you can do some photoshop work with that background. As usual a great job.

John, as a friend, advise 4340m3. Forget the white pants and red sweater. Trust me.

Personally, I like the last set of photos. I love the pose.

I like 4347 (cheated and looked at the ones others liked) but would crop the pants out altogether

Just curious...

Did you try any with them looking at each other instead of at the camera? I've found that can make for very endearing 'couple' shots...

Also, when I photograph people, I normally try to avoid letting them know when the shutter is going to trip... I try to engage them in conversation and shoot 'between poses'... You can often catch wonderful, genuine smiles and displays of affection.

I think the background is a stroke of genius... I'm sick of seeing engagement shots with black backgrounds :)

Please extend our congratulations and best wishes to the happy couple :)

Erin4347-m3-s.jpg is my favorite. You can see the love and giddy happiness in that shot...very appropriate for an engagement announcement. Great job :)

hello john,
I like the 4347 series. They look like an engaged couple in this shot! Some of the others look a little 'forced.'

I agree with the idea that some of the shots seem forced. The woman seems like the smile is excruciating. Also the black and white work better I think.

I would go with the 4347 series too, they look much more relaxed and coupley. Personally, I would steer clear of the 4346, looks a bit aggressive for an engagement picture!

I have to agree... 4346 looks more like an ad for a romantic commedy where the couple fights till they fall in love.

I love 4347-m4-s. I like the soft focus and the lighting coming from the back. They look like they are really truely in love in this photo. Very nice work John. :)

4347! Hands down the best. The pose on the knee is cute but she doesn't look comfortable. This one is the most flattering of both subjects and truly the best lighting. All of the others I thought she looked uncomfortable with a somewhat cautious smile. 4347 had them both looking relaxed, and very lovely. Skin tone and expressions are perfect. The color photograph is great but there seems to be a yellowish cast to it - his teeth seemed a little yellow. 4347 had the best pose, most relaxed expressions and best lighting.
