I know this is really random, but how many of you actually calibrate your monitors? I probably wouldn't know anything about calibrating if it wasn't for the fact that I went to school for Photography and we had a few lessons about it. I didn't actually get one (Spyder3) until I was out of college and could afford it.

I always find it frustrating when I send my photos to clients or have other people look at them and say that... it's too magenta, or overexposed when I know it's correct but they don't calibrate their monitors. What do photographers do in this situation? It almost seems pointless when what feels like 90% of the world doesn't do it or know anything about it.

I have the same frustration with comments on voting here. It looks perfect on my monitor then someone comes in with "way too much red" or some nonsense.

I use the OSX built in calibration tool, but it's software, and on top of that I edit and submit from my laptop so I don't know how exact that is.

For the shots that I expect to do well I check it on my iMac first and then again on my work monitor after submission so I figure I'm fairly OK on calibration.

It should be a rule to have our monitors calibrated before voting or participating in challenges. I can't stand the 'too dark' comments I get.

People should think before they make comments like that. Unless you're sure 100% that your monitor is calibrated you should refrain from making these comments. I probably will not enter the Black on Black challenge for this reason. I know I'll get the too dark comments. grrr

...and if you think voting is down now, just wait till they implement a rule like this one. Not only would you have to direct people to sites where calibration devices could be found, we would have to have a thread dedicated on how to use it properly...and I am certain there would have to be a great deal of discussion as to which of these calibration devices ought to be used.

...and one could argue that even comments of this ilk are better than none at all, in that you know that someone did take the time to study your image as opposed to just glazing it over and doling our a 4 score. One also has the option to communicate with the voter (preferably post challenge) and informing them that in your view their monitor needs calibrating...this is after all a learning site.

Just a thought,

Ray
