Dear fellow forum users,

I'm fairly new here and do not wish to start a controversy. Please do not take this post the wrong way - as it is not meant to be a rant on any other brands. I just wanted to write a quick note on what it means, to me, to own a Pentax (also to get some thoughts off my mind about the content written below)

Last night my K10D was stolen from my car - along with my 12-24, 18-250, 50mm, Lensbaby, etc. I was stupid to not put it in the trunk. I came back and found my window smashed by a rock, glass covering the seats, and my camera bag gone. I live in a little town and am not used to having to hide things in my car. A city, I've found, is not like my little town though.

Believe me in that I am extremely thankful that I was not harmed (nor the people I was with). I do understand this is merely camera equipment - there certainly are more horrible things happening in the world right now. That being said, I'd like to think I have a little right to be sad.

My K10D was the perfect camera - it was beefy (just the way I like it!), weather sealed, and fit perfectly in my hands. I kept it in great condition - a lovely padded bag, UV filters for the lenses, cleaning cloths galore, and even a non-bubbly screen protector. It made the pictures in my head come into fruition and helped to record family vacations, pets, and little moments.

I think a bigger part of why I enjoyed my K10D so much was that it was an "underdog". When people come into my store and ask me what I shoot with, I like to surprise them and say "a Pentax!" I enjoy (immensely) that I can take lovely pictures without the "usual brands". (Also keep in mind that I realize that cameras are merely the tool to the artistic mind - I wish more people would understand that. I just have a lot of people coming in with two brands stuck in their head [I know that you know what brands they are!] and I like that I can introduce them to a different kind of camera.)

The realistic part of me knows that my camera is going to be sold - pawned off for some unhealthy habits or to make a quick buck. My memory cards, full of family pictures and vacations (thankfully I've made backups) are probably formatted without a second thought. There is, however, a little part of me that hopes that whoever has my camera is taking good care of it. Maybe they had to sell it for food. Maybe they'll realize what that camera is and be thankful they have it. In another little part of my mind, there's a child who dreams of becoming a photographer and the person who took my camera is making their dreams come true. Perhaps I've just created another Pentaxian.

I am truly sad. I do plan on replacing it (I'm hoping the insurance company will help me with that) but I'll always have fond memories of my K10 and I hope whoever has it now might end up feeling the same way.

P.S. I did not create this post to ask for attention. I can tell my family and friends how much this ordeal has hurt, but no one can really understand like you guys can. Even though I know it's nearly impossible, I hope that none of you have to go through such a situation. Keep your cars clean (they'll think you're hiding something if you don't!), your cameras insured, and your equipment in the trunk. Me - I'll keep a Rottie around to carry my equipment from now on.

I would be just as devastated. I don't know much about Pentax camera's, but I do know that if you can properly use the equipment it doesn't matter what it is. I am sure that what you lost was cherished. I do understand what I would feel like... it would suck.

Here's to you finding another camera made just for you!

That sucks. May the battery explode in the hands of the thief.

i handled k10d two weeks ago and did not feel like putting it back. It is well built camera. Feel in hand was best so far as far as pentax cameras go.

Be careful about equipment.

(i know it is easier to lecture others and i am also forgetful person ... ).

Wow, that’s sad, I wish you luck with the insurance.

Of course, the K10D is not manufactured anymore. I had a look at a K-7 today in the electronics store. It feels just as good. ;-Þ

I plan on replacing it with the K-7 but perhaps I'll get another K10 for sentimental value! :)

Thanks for listening everyone :) I appreciate the fact that I can use this forum as a place to air my thoughts.

Looking back over my post from last night, I'm not too sure that my ideas came across as well as I would've liked them too. I think that's ok though. I was sad (and to be truthful, a bit teary eyed) and all my thoughts were jumbly. Reading it this morning I'm reminded of a teenager writing in a journal after a break up lol. It's all about just getting the words down and not really worrying about how it sounds.

So I thank you for listening (reading!) the thoughts of a sad, tired, and frantic person.

And yes, Yo-Spiff, if my camera is being not taken care of I hope it seeks revenge on its user and does something terrible to them! (That wasn't too mean was it? :) )

Have you checked out Pentax Forums They have a very active marketplace and K10D's are often available.

Tim

PS: Sorry about your loss.

I think you expressed yourself well and your point came across. We are all attached to our cameras. Yes, they are just things, but they are OUR things. And the uniqueness of a non-Canon/non-Nikon adds to that, most likely.

VERY sorry for your loss. I, too, realize that if mine were stolen I would replace them, but it just wouldn't be the same and you'd always wonder what happened to the poor guy they took away, hoping it had a good home. Perfectly understandable.

So sorry to hear about your K10. I understand the "underdog" statement, as I usually don't follow the crowd either. I had a very prized guitar stolen from me; it wasn't the value of it, but the fact that I played pro with it for many years and it had become a part of me over that time. I felt like I had lost an arm when it was gone. (I eventually found it for sale on ebay and bought it back!)

I do hope your insurance is fair and you can upgrade to the K7 soon.
