Don't leave yet. I'm having a going away party.

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE, BOTH OF YOU STAY!!! We have lost some great people in the past and I would hate to see more leave. I don't know what's all going on; I don't even know who was suspended or banned. I hope all this does not narrow the voting spectrum more than it has been. I also believe we need more open dialog.

I don't want to leave, but I can't change the way that I vote, and that is unacceptable to the SC.

I went thru the last 20 of pointandshoot's photos, and here's what I came up with:

5 I didn't vote on. Now let's go over the 15 I did vote on, in order.

10 and a posthumous blue ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

10 and a posthumous red ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

8 I suspected it was him because of the cat-through-texture thing. I might have given a 10 if I didn't know it was him, but I have high standards for pointy.

10 and a posthumous blue ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

7 I didn't know it was him.

10 - this was the style challenge. I thought it might be him, and eventually I figured out it was a goat, so probably him. By then, the 10 was given.

10 and a blue ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

10 and a blue ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

10 I suspected it might be him so I didn't give him a ribbon. Still the best shot in the challenge, though. Him and cutout.

10 and a yellow ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

10 and a blue ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

10 and a blue ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

9 I didn't give him a 10 or a ribbon because I suspected it might be pointandshoot. I'm tired of giving him 10s and ribbons. So is the SC, obviously. But voting is anonymous, so I can't stop.

6 yeah, that's right. a 6. Didn't turn me on as much as usual.

10 and a yellow ribbon. I didn't know it was him.

So, there are some numbers for you.

Notice 11 10's and 9 ribbons. I do NOT recommend this strategy for you buddy voters out there!

Really it's ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' pointandshoot who should be suspended for being SO MUCH F&*&ING BETTER than you slobs! He's the one who's being unfair.

The idea that Don would cheat is incomprehensible to me. Would it be possible for him to care any less about the vagaries of the regular DPC voting process?
03/31/2010 08:26:41 PM · #155
And I'd just like to point out the ludicrousness of the SC having to hunt thru voting data/history in ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' posthumous's case: he FRAKKIN posts his top votes in his alternative ribbon thread after every challenge: clearly he is not a lurking sneaky favoritism buddy voter.

The more I look at this thread, the more I think it must be an AF. Don, have you tried to see whether you can submit an image to say the 'waiting' challenge? Or even resubmitting an FS image?

Several, and none of them were 1's. I don't give out 1 votes, ever. It is not agaist the rules to vote on images when you know who the photograper is, as long as you vote honestly. If you must know, the abstract entries in the Product challenge got 3s and 4s from me.

Let's see... We saw you manipulating a loophole in the system, during voting, to identify which photographers had made these entries. Having that knowledge to hand, you voted on them. But it's OK because you voted "honestly". We know that, because you told us, just now.

Now Don says he DIDN'T know these were Pointandshoot's images, but that he liked them, and gave them 10's, which is what he does with the images he gives his Posthumous Ribbons to. But apparently you KNOW he didn't do that "honestly"? How?

I am underwhelmed by you, sir.

R.

I would love to hear an answer to this...

No problem.

I don't know anything about Don or how he voted. I never stated an opinion on that either way. I was referring to my voting, no one else's.

Also, I wasn't suspended, that I am aware of, because of my reaction to the Product challenge. I don't know what ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Yanko is talking about.

Look, I like Don and I am a regular reader of his ribbon thread, even hope to see one of my images there one day.

Not only that, I like ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Bear_Music, ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Melethia, ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Ursula, and many others quite a bit. ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' bspurgeon, not so much --- kidding ;-) To me, these are the members that make DPC what it is.

And for the record, I thought many of the abstract images were stunning, particularly Bear's and Melethia's. I thought it was a shame they couldn't be voted on in a more appropriate challenge.

As I've stated many many times, I have no issue with an abstract image, or any other type of image, being entered in a product challenge. Heck, my entry could be considered DNMC. When was the last time you saw ice cream in a catalog? Some people just don't seem to be able to accept that it's not about the choice of image. My issue was with collusion and my surprise was with some of the members involved.

Then in the ensuing conversation on the matter I found it a little disingenuous when the group said there was no ulterior motive involved, no point being made about fine art photography, or people's reaction to the juried voting, etc. I know there were some feathers ruffled in that one. And then the refusal to acknowledge that reasonable people could see this effort as negative, or even manipulative. ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Melethia was the only one to acknowledge that this group and its actions could be seen as I and many others saw it. We were even demeaned and belittled for even thinking such a thing.

So then this little brouhaha emerges and the same people that were demeaning and belittling others for thinking as they did appear to have the same emotional response to this issue as I and others had with the Abstract Club. (That's the ironic part), and yet your angst is understandable and mine is not.

I did use the the favorite system to identify a few of the abstract images. If that is against the rules or the SC can determine that it affected my voting in any way, I'll accept the consequences. I only did that for the purposes of the discussion that was going on. That's how I realized that most of the people defending the Abstract Club were the ones that were in it. I didn't use it for voting purposes. I don't use my votes or my images to make a point like that. Both are too important to me to use in that fashion. You can chose to believe that or not.

I do hope this is some sort of April Fool's stunt. Langdon has been known to be pretty devious when it comes to April Fools Day. I do not want to see Don suspended. If it is a joke, I will join the chorus of those who take offense. But this has a ring of seriousness to it. I guess we'll see soon enough.

For those that still think ill of me, so be it. I've never been one to hide my feelings regardless of those involved. And those who've never met me or spent any meaningful time with me and yet think you know who I am or what I'm about, you have no idea.

I've tried to be helpful, respectful, and thankful for all DPC and its members have provided me over the years. I'm not always successful, but I do try.

I do not envy the SC for flac they are going to be getting for this. Unfortunatly I think that no matter how they tested this there would be some unfortunate false possitives. I hope those unfortunately affected that were clean will be able stick around. Some of you I would be really shocked to find out you were stacking votes or whatever. Sadly I think the reality is that this needed to happen sooner or later.

Actually, I had the same thought and I tried to vote on a challenge. I'm really suspended.

Keeping a good thought for you. Hang in there.

Wow, this thread is awesome! It's by far the most entertaining thing I've seen all day. Thanks Langdon!

All we need is live commentary by Herbert Morrison over the radio...

"Oh, my! Get out of the way, please! And all the folks agree that this is terrible; this is the one of the worst catastrophes in the world. Oh, the humanity!"

Yes, let's see this lifted at midnight, and Langdon and his Supreme Council can have the last laugh. April Fools! Then we can all get back to business.

If it is a joke, I hope Don is in on it. Otherwise, it's just cruel.

These are my top vote getters according to my profile.

wildiris ------ 6.4762 -- 21 votes
Ecce Signum ---- 6.4615 -- 13 votes
artvet -------- 6.4348 -- 23 votes
Limbo --------- 6.4286 -- 14 votes
SJCarter ------- 6.4000 -- 10 votes
Coley -------- 6.4000 -- 10 votes
orvaratli ------ 6.4000 -- 10 votes
Lonz ----------- 6.5000 -- 28 votes

Does this mean they are my friends and I'm helping them out? No.

I'm interested in seeing Don's favourite photographers he votes on. Maybe we can ascertain a pattern that proves he's not purposely voting in a way that the SC thinks he is.

If you don't know what or how to see these stats go to your profile and click on View All in your Favorites section on the left hand side. Then click on Manage Your Favorites. Once there click on View your statistically favorite photographers and you'll see a list of your top 50 participants that you vote on in challenges.

And Wendy of course. She seems genuinely upset by this and her case seems to be just as problematic and unfair in my opinion. She hasn't been suspended though.

as a really fresh newcomer here I am probably way out of place to comment here but as I understand it...

this is a site where people put photos up for rating and critique.

People vote on which they prefer.

At the end the photos are listed in order of popularity. No one gets killed. No cash prizes or gifts. Comments (helpful mostly) are made.

Why the angst and fury about possible 'cheating'?

Wouldn't it be expected that some people will vote high regularly for certain photographers simply because they do stuff that resonates with that persons taste? The more specific someones taste the fewer photographers will tend to be in that person's radar so they will often score them highly. Is that bad? Wouldn't it be worse to vote against what you find resonates?

And if for some weird reason a few people pick the same photographer not because they like the image but as a favour... who cares? In that case the only real loser is the person who didn't vote according to their taste in my books. Winning a challenge isn't like it is life or death is it?
